It seems letting cravings control what and how to eat is not the best strategy to healthy living. Mary Maxfield, in her article “Food For Thought: Resisting the Moralization of Food” discusses her views on how people should eat. She believes people crave what their bodies need, therefore, people should eat what they crave. Maxfield claims that diet, health, and weight are not correlated with each other, and because of this, people view obesity as unhealthy, thus forcing them to distinguish “right, healthy” foods from the “wrong, unhealthy” choices. As a result, she concludes that science has nothing to do with Pollan believes that Americans rely on nutrition science, the study of individual nutrients like carbohydrates, fats, and antioxidants, to fix the Western diet because it is the best source that exists. However, scientists have developed conflicting theories that confuse people to conclude as to how the Western diet causes disease, such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Pollan disagrees with any type theory and instead blames the food and health industries who take advantage of new theories but do not to fix the problem of the Western diet. In turn, not only does he suggest people spending more time and money on better food choices, but he also proposes many tips to eat better, as well as a rule that will allow Americans climb out of the Western diet: Eat food. Michael Pollan, an American author, journalist, activist, and professor of journalism at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism (Michael Pollan), writes in his book In Defense of Food, the dangers of nutritionism and how to escape the Western diet and subsequently most of the chronic diseases the diet imparts. In the chapter “Nutritionism Defined” Pollan defines the term nutritionism. Pollan’s main assertion being how the ideology of nutritionism defines food as the sum of its nutrients, and from this viewpoint Pollan goes on to write how nutritionism divides food into two categories, with each macronutrient divided against each other as either bad or good nutrients, in a bid for focus of our food fears and enthusiasms. Finally, Pollan concludes that with the relentless focus nutritionism places on nutrients and their interplay distinctions between foods become irrelevant and abandoned.

This movie revealed that there is a very small variety of companies that consumers purchase their food from. These few companies actually control what is out on the shelves and what we put into our bodies. These companies have changed food production into a food production business. Many of these companies experiment with ways to create large quantities of food at low production costs to result in an enormous amount of profit for themselves. Some of the production cost cuts also result in less healthy food for the population. It is entitled “Escape from the Western Diet”. In this piece of Pollan’s writing, he talks about the western diet in a broad sense. He highlights the do’s and don’t for this particular type of diet. He stated that it is “high in saturated fats, red meats, ‘empty’ carbohydrates(junk food) and low in fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, seafood and poultry”. (Escape from the Western Diet). Humans have benefitted from this in many ways as well. For one thing, we evolved larger brains and better cognitive ability in order to determine and remember what is safe to eat. Humans also have a complex sense of taste that allows us to determine what foods have a high energy content (sweet things) and what may be poisonous (disgusting or bitter things). Since humans began to cook, we have expanded our options by broadening the spectrum of edible things. Cooking opens the door to otherwise inedible substances because it breaks things down and often neutralizes toxins. This has only worsened the omnivore’s dilemma as it adds more options to what you can eat, thereby making the question of what you should eat harder to answer. Food culture and traditions such as those heavily present in countries like Italy and France solve this problem by creating guidelines to help navigate this issue.
