“Who knows only his own generation remains always a child.” This quote from George Norlin echoes the edification that cultural exposure can offer. How does African dance relate to do modern dance? The two are so heterogeneous in their make-up that one would not think of them as having similarities. The truth, however, is that all dance forms are linked in some way or another; they all strengthen and sharpen each other. Modern dance has its roots in African dance with the emphasis placed on the connection of weight and gravity. Brenda Dixon Gottschild names five aesthetics that are present in African dance. A particular piece that draws attention to the relation of the five aesthetics to modern dance is “Split Sides”, choreographed by Merce Cunningham.

The history of belly dancing began in Ancient Egypt around 5000 BC, but instead of belly dancing it was called Raks Sharki evidence has shown tomb paintings showing female dancers and musicians. The first was found in the tomb of Neb Amon it was uncovered at Thebes. However, the aspects of dance back then were for celebration and some entertainment. Also, their dance was related to the worship of the fertility goddess like Hathor in Egypt. She was a famous goddess of Ancient Egypt known as “the Great One of Many Names”. This dance would be attached to fertility or sometimes performed during childbirth. In addition, to this the way the dancers would move their hips in circles, swaying and shaking of the body like the pictures of The Banquet that was in the tomb of Netumen from 1400BC it showed the development of choreography and music in Egyptian culture. I think that Egypt kind of set the grounds for belly dancing even though many people do not know where belly dancing originated from but, have many ideas. Today, Egypt thought to be the home of belly dancing still, but their two main dance styles are Raqs Baladi and Raqs Sharqi. The oriental dance has a contained or internal feeling kind of compared to other styles.

The Folklorico group presentation I was honored to observed was the “Grupo Folklorico Juventud” from North Salinas High School. I decided to attend to this presentation because I use to be part of this Folklorico group. I also enjoy watching the dances for the reason that I believe they are beyond beautiful. It is amazing how a simple dance could transmit so much information while representing a region from Mexico. From my observation experienced, I noticed every region has different movements and customs for a reason. While observing the presentation I noticed most women used long skirts to create different shapes. They usually create the eight shape, half a circle or an entire circle which is created when the dancer does an entire spin while holding and moving their skirt. The skirt is also moved in different levels, such as high, medium, and low. The two levels that are used in most of the dances is the high and the medium level. While dancing the men and women usually do the same steps and movements. All the dances include “zapateados” which are known as foot dances or stomps. The “zapateados” are usually done with different parts of the feet such as the toe, heel and the sole of the feet. The dances include “zapateados” with different sections of the feet because every part creates a different sound. Most of the dances also include jumps and turns. It is extremely important for the
Dance is a universal expression. People can easily tell stories or express how they feel through this form of art. Just like an instrument, dancing is how a dancer makes music. In general dancing has changed throughout time. How we dance now is not how it was done in the fifties and sixties. Like music dance evolves according to what is popular. Something is constantly being added to all of the different genres of dance. Although there are many different styles of dances in the world, there are some that are more popular: Zumba, Ballet, Salsa, and the most popular, Hip Hop.
How was dance in 600 BC through 1 BC, and were the different types? “The Choros” was a dance that didn’t really involve movement but it had great meanings to the people and their Gods. Choros was a dance in which a group of people would dance in a circle by the temple virgins. In India this dance would involve hand movements. The temple virgin was the centerpiece of the developing Greek Theatre. This was done in honor of a God and usually held during the Games of Olympia. The God that the people during this time would dance to was Dionysus. He was the God of fertility and wine, females would dance to this in a state of frenzy. As they danced they would carry long phallic symbols known as Thyrsoi, they would tear it into pieces and devour the raw flesh of a sacrificial animal. With these practices the Dionysians also developed a more structures form of ...
Contemporary/modern is another type of dance similar to ballet but modern dance frees itself from the strict rules of ballet and focuses more on the dancer’s expression of inner feelings. Like many Indian arts, Indian dance also has its root in religion. Without the religious and cultural background of India, the growth and beauty of Indian dance is not possible. In ‘Natya Shastra’, there is a small story about the origin of Indian dance. According to Hindu mythology, dance first existed in heaven. There was always a constant conflict between the Asuras and the Devas for wealth and power. The Devas were tired of the Asuras’ greediness and jealousy.
Kathak is the classical dance of north indian style that was characterized by rhythmic footwork danced under the weight of more than 100 ankle bells, spectacular spins, and a representation of themes from Persian and Urdu poetry alongside those of Hindu mythology. The word kathak means "to tell a story". It is derived from the dance dramas of ancient India. Kathak arose from the fusion of Hindu and Muslim cultures that took place during the Mughal period. More than any other South Asian dance form, kathak expresses the aesthetic principles of Islamic culture.
