Being in my Counseling 110 class has taught me that there is more in my life than High school. I learned that I need to separate myself from my high school and I need to learn to be more of an independent person and pilot my own life. According to Eric Hoffer on page 14 of the On Course, “In a time of drastic change, it is the learners who inherit the future” I learned that in order to succeed in my own life I need to have Discipline, responsibility, and motivation in order to survive in real life.
The first thing I need to apply to my life is Self-discipline. I need it in my life because without I would not want to do any of the hard task and go straight tasks. An example is that during my first couple of semesters here at Palomar College I want to always slack off by being on the computer, XBOX, and hanging out with my friends instead of doing the most important thing, my homework. Self-discipline is defined as the act of disciplining or power to discipline one’s own feeling and desires with the intention of improving one self. In Chapter four Henery David Thoreau says that “it is not enough to be busy… the question is: What are we busy about. In order to succeed in self-discipline in need to have the persistence in finishing college in order to get a degree so I could become either a nurse, or a special education teacher. One way to do this is to not just thing of one way of doing things, because if you fail at it there is always other ways to complete that task. Back during my senior year in High school I decided that I wanted to join the Cross Country team. After the second week of practice I pulled my hamstring and was unable to keep on practicing and I was unable to go and see the doctor. I really wanted to stay with the t...

...hat goal when I am stuck in college trying to pass my classes. Charles j. Givens states in chapter three that from his own experience, there is no question that the speed with which you are able to achieve your goals is directly related to how clearly and how often you are able to visualize your goals. I discovered my dream a few years ago of being a nurse when I was watching “Tramam:Life in the ER” a TV show that follows doctor around different hospital while they are in the process of treating patients who come by either walking in, or by ambulance. I see myself completing my goal in a few years and I will get an opportunity to achieve my goals of becoming a nurse.
My Counseling 110 has taught me to look forward into my life and find the goals that I want to achieve my goals by separating myself from my high school and to try to move forward and achieve my goals.
Schall describes ‘self discipline’ to be a fundamental principal that will ultimately enrich the ‘self.’ Hence, to posses qualities of dedication through a set of self-discipline habits are virtues that will enable to comprehend the truth in our reality. Indeed, the author makes a key-point by explaining that one must be able to achieve order in our mundane lives, from what “deviates from what it is we know we ought to be or do.” Therefore, one must be able to overcome any obstacle that may impede from reaching our goal of seeking knowledge and understanding. However, self-discipline is only the “beginning of wisdom, not its end.” Hence, wisdom may be achieve through a personal library, by studying the greatest minds that had existed in the past and perhaps, in the our present time, in which they have come close and/or achieve the goal one purposely
One of my goals I want to accomplish is to get the highest degree possible in college. I want to major in nursing and the highest degree in nursing is a doctorate level degree. Even though I have to get my bachelor’s and master’s degree first, I will accomplish my goal and get my doctorates. I am currently focusing on school and getting excellent grade so I can get into a good college. I also occasionally look up medical things and, learn more things about my future career on the internet. This will help me prepare for what I have to do and what my expectations are being a Neonatal Nurse.
The choices we make early in life have an enormous impact on our future. I have always known that I wanted to directly impact people’s lives and my personal experiences have set me on the school-counseling path. In the future, I would love to influence another generation of students to soar for their dreams.
Goals give you something to measure yourself against and give you direction. Currently, my main goal is to graduate from East Carolina University with a bachelor’s degree of science in engineering with a concentration in biomedical engineering. My anticipated time to graduation is five years with a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Beyond getting my bachelor’s degree at East Carolina University, I would like to go to medical school and become a doctor focusing on prosthetics. In order to make my goals a reality, I will have to work diligently to remain on track throughout my schooling. Additional goals that I have set for myself are to complete homework assignments by the time they are due, reading assigned material before it is discussed in class, doing well in each of my courses this semester, successfully participating in extracurricular activities, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in engineering, getting a position as an engineer, and becoming a leader within both the engineering community and the general community. A world-class engineering student woul...
Individuals’ perceptions of their life/worth have the power to control the goals that they can carry out and meet. Every day we are learning new things and everyone has his/her own unique ways of learning. My strong desire to help students with their academic, personal, and social needs make me a strong candidate as a school counselor. While completing my undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Program Administration I learned a great deal about myself. I have a passion for learning and want to share and express that love for learning with students. I feel that the Master of School Counseling program provides a direct path to my career goals of helping students to comprehend subject matter while learning to love learning as I do. Not only will
I have learned a lot from this class such as when it is proper to use a Simi colon and a colon. Another thing that helped me out is how to manage stress by doing breathing exercises from an article I read in my UNI 120 class. It created a way for me to handle stress in a positive way. The third important information I’ve erudite was how to solve integral equation in my MAT 210 in which I was excited to learn. I hope to learn even more next semester from my PSY 101 because I love learning about the thought process of how humans think. What I have learned about myself this semester is that I am very social, responsible, and always positive. All these characteristics gave me the capability to be successful this
I cannot recall a more rewarding experience than helping facilitate a child’s education while enabling parent participation alike. These experiences have drawn me to my current position as an Educational Assistant where I am constantly interacting and establishing relationships with students, learning about their goals and aspirations. It is that same desire to empower our future students that has steered me towards a career as a school counselor. By enrolling in the Masters in counseling program, I aspire to develop methods and experience to become an effective, experienced, and adaptable school counselor that promotes self-awareness, allowing students to realize their full potential and impetus them towards a promising future. I want to learn skills that facilitate personal and career development, ensuring that our students grow accomplishing their goals and ambitions.
Look at your life now. Think of your future. Think about what you want to become, your aspirations, ambitions, and goals for yourself. Many of us, in this very room are seniors; we are about to graduate high school and enter a critically imperative phase in our lives, our opportunities are endless, the world is at our feet. No one can tell us that we can’t become what we wish. We alone have the power to pursue what we exemplify to be greatness.
The next generation of young adults is not being taught the important life skills needed to thrive in today’s world. Adults who have never had to challenge themselves are not going up the ladder of success. Dr. Whelan, a sociologist who has taught at many universities, has three books, and several notable achievements wrote the article, “Helping first year students help them...
As previously mentioned, becoming a nurse has always been a goal of mine. Throughout high school, I got the opportunity to narrow down exactly what I wanted to do in the medical field by taking nursing classes and participating in clinical rotations. I received my CNA license at the end of the course and through learning many beneficial life skills and nursing techniques, I realized during that time I wanted to go beyond CNA work, and that the nursing field was where God was leading me. Everyone defines success differently. To some people, success could be the simplest task being completed, or a major life goal being achieved. To me however, success is when I reach the goal I or others have set before me. Anything that involves my future career or potential in the medical field drives me to meet nothing but
I felt as if I was on a different planet, as much as I tried to understand I was still lost in the woods. That day I got home nearly in tears because I didn’t want to fail the math class, for a second I thought about quitting, but then with a positive attitude, I decided to give it a second opportunity. College was different from high school, attending College is like going to a shopping center, the same people enter the same store, but many of them don’t know each other, and the classroom walls are plain white, no painting or decorations. The students are responsible for their actions, assignments and attendance if they pass or fail their class is their responsibility. Returning to school is a whole new experience, in a way I felt excited to be able to expand my knowledge and prepare for a better future. On the other hand, I am blessed with more responsibilities than just school. Now I am compromised to my kids that depend on me. It’s not just homework, also helping my kids with their homework, doing laundry, cleaning the house, and caring for my kids. To be honest, it’s not easy attending college it’s like having another child. I commit to my classes and assignments, just how I do it with my children. Attending college and being a mother, a spouse, and an employee does squeeze my energy. I knew it wasn’t going to be simple, but I also knew it was not impossible. I continued my education, and I know taking baby steps will benefit my future. “The capacity to learn is a gift; the ability to learn is a skill; the willingness to learn is a choice.” (Brian
It wasn’t too long before I realized that high school was not just a walk in the park as I anticipated and to take it more serious than what I was. Sophomore year is when I figured this all out and in my Junior year is when I flipped the script. Now I'm striving, working, and improving on my learning to graduate. In my sophomore I wasn’t doing so sound, in I would say the majority of my classes I did fail 2 of my classes when honestly it shouldn’t have happened. The two classes I didn’t pass were English and History. I only didn’t pass these two since I just didn’t take it seriously and honestly, I was lazy thinking that it was such a breeze that I could just soar through these classes. I occasionally wouldn't go up to my teacher when I should have so that also took an effect
I have always wanted to make good grades but I never really set any goals but, then I realized that setting academic goals are way more important than people realize . I then started to set goals like my sophomore year of high school after I did that it really helped me focus on my future and what I wanted for myself. My goals I think pushed me so much more academically they opened my eyes a little bit more. One Goal I set was to graduate High school with a Core 40 diploma, which I did, so that is one goal down and a bunch more to go. My senior year I started applying to college but my main goal was to make into Saint Mary-of-the Woods and when I received my acceptance letter I was ecstatic. So far, I am still trying to figure out my academic goals for college but, I do know for sure that I want to succeed in every single way that I can so I can make a better future for myself. A goal that I made this year is to make the dean’s list every single time, for this I will study so hard for every test, do all of my homework, and ask questions when I have them and maybe even getting a tutor. This challenge will probably be really tough but I believe that I can do it if I put my mind to it, and I tend to be a very determined
Life After High School I’ve just entered my senior year of high school. I know that this is a very important year. I have a lot of decisions to make and not much time to make them. These decisions will either make or break my life, and I want to make sure that I make them to the best of my ability, because there is no turning back. I need to make sure I definitely want to attend college.
A study performed in 1992, reported approximately 3,400,000 youth had failed to complete high school and were not enrolled in high school (Starr 1998). This statistic is based on the United States where job competition has greatly increased due to technology. Many of these student lacked the support and training necessary to succeed in today’s society. Currently in every high school across the nation, there is a person responsible for offering support and training to the youth of America. Available for all students is a guidance counselor. Counselors within the high school setting play an influential role in the forming of post high school goals through the planning of numerous activities.
