Police brutality is a deadly weapon used against minorities. The very first cases of police brutality date as far back as the 1800’s and early 1900’s. In recent years, much debate has arisen about whether or not policemen/women should be held accountable for their abusive actions. Physical assault among the police force and the public have become more persistent. While some audiences feel that excessive force is deemed necessary, more and more people are beginning to realize that police officers are abusing their powers and using excessive force among the public. “84 percent of police officers report that they’ve seen colleagues use excessive force on civilians, and 61 percent admit they don’t always report ‘even serious criminal violations that involve abuse of authority by fellow officers” (Weisburd). Some officers come into question themselves if they should report a fellow colleague mishandling. They are scared that them speaking up about their mishandling will result in hostile treatment that might come with speaking up about their coworkers misconduct. In the end they decide to turn a blind eye when they see their peers using unnecessary force. Their mistreatment of civilians is disgusting. Even though these are serious offenses worth being reported to authorities that is not what happens. Rather than making sure that this unacceptable and inexcusable behavior is never used again the officers, colleagues and Departement are making sure that their dangerous actions never come to light. Considering that “people in minority communities have long suffered from persistent abuses by police” cases like these need to be reported. These numbers are astonishing. Police officer jobs are to protect us and be selfless, but they are just doing the opposite. Instead they are protecting themselves and being selfish. When hearing the phrase “police brutality,” many people imagine batons cracking skulls, tasers electrocuting bodies and bullets penetrating innocent teens. While police officers have been known to use violence, police brutality does not occur as often as many believe. In many situations, officers have to act on impulse and curiosity, despite the backlash the media may create.
In America, police brutality affects and victimizes people of color mentally and socially. Social injustice has become a major issue, which involves the principle of white supremacy vs minorities. The current police brutality that has been occurring is culturally disconnecting ethnicities from one another. According to Cincinnati Police Chief Jeffrey Blackwell, “.the cultural disconnect is very real; you have the weight of generations of abuse on African Americans,” (Flatow, 2016). For example, over the past four years, there have been countless acts of police brutality.
Police brutality is a very real problem that many Americans face today. The police carry an enormous burden each day. Police work is very stressful and involves many violent and dangerous situations. In many confrontations the police are put in a position in which they may have to use force to control the situation. There are different levels of force and the situation dictates the level use most of the time. The police have very strict rules about police use force and the manner in which they use it. In this paper I will try to explain the many different reason the police cross the line, and the many different people that this type of behavior effects. There are thousands of reports each year of assaults and ill treatment against officers who use excessive force and violate the human rights of their victims. Furthermore, many individuals believe that the police officers are misusing their power by taking extreme measures when situations arise. In shootings for example, we see that many police officers claim that their lives were in danger and the individual displayed threatening behavior that required them to fire. Many people contend this as they think that the police officers did not have sufficient discretion in firing their weapon and used their deep rooted, or even subtle, racism in handling the situation. In today’s society, police officers are very cautious on how much force they can use on a suspect due to the police brutality going on right now. Police brutality is defined as the use of force exceeding what is necessary, many people argue that there should be new policies to determine how much force a police officer can use and also have laws that will convict officers who have killed people by using too much force, so that there is less incidents in the future.

The reason why I chose this topic is because police brutality happens all the time in the United States and still remains unrecognized by many. Additionally, the public should be knowledgeable about this topic because of how serious this crime can be and the serious outcomes that police brutality can have on other police officers and the public. The job of police officers is to maintain public order, prevent, and detect crimes. They are involved in very dangerous and stressful occupations that can involve violent situations that must be stopped and controlled by any means.
