“You never get a second chance to make a first impression...” - Harlan Hogan While we can correct, over time, misconceptions of a bad first impression, the first impression will be with us forever. Whether we like to admit it or not, as a society we judge everyone we meet, as soon as we meet them. Right or wrong, each of us do this, usually in under the first 30 seconds of meeting someone new. This is done automatically for many reasons including for safety and procreation. However well evolved we may be, our natural instincts remain intact to assist in keeping us safe and the human race to continue on.
We look at hair style, clothing choice, piercings, and tattoos. I know I do this everyday as a state trooper. When I see someone with prison-type tattoo's - that's a clue to me that they may be up to no good. While not everyone who has neck tattoo is a felon, it does heighten my awareness when I see one. These observations are not the only things I use, but our first impressions are a valuable tool. Just as I am sizing someone up, they too are doing the same to me. If I pull someone over and approach their vehicle with my a stained, untucked uniform shirt, and with boots that are scuffed and looked they hadn't been shined since being in the academy, the occupants will be formulating a negative image of the officer at there vehicle window. For most people this would be an annoyance that someone who looks so slovenly wears a badge, to someone looking to cause the officer harm - this would be an open invitation. If one looks lazy, they probably are. If an officer's hasn't taken the time to get their uniform in ord...

...ing that inaccuracies may exist, we need to adjust for those within our impressions.
Our own bias' are always present. Many studies have shown that attractive people are hired more often, receive higher pay, and are generally perceived to be more happy then unattractive people. Jeremy Biesanz of the University of British Columbia stated, “You do judge a book by its cover, but a beautiful book lead you to read it more closely.”

The Role of First Impressions when we Meet Someone Essay

- Why do job candidate wear a suit for a job interview. Why do defense attorneys have their clients dress neatly and get a haircut before they are seen before a Jury. First impressions are considered to be essential. Many crucial decisions involve forming impressions about another person. Essay on The Desired Effect: First Impressions

- The Desired Effect: First Impressions Whether we like it or not, it takes just three seconds to come to a conclusion about someone new (Flora, 2004). First impressions strike like lightning and before you hear the thunder, you have formed a first opinion. In First Impressions Matter, “According to New York University, Graduate School of Business, people make eleven decisions about us in the first seven seconds of contact: (1) education level, (2) economic level, (3) perceived creditability and believability, (4) trustworthiness, (5) level of sophistication, (6) sexual identification, (7) level of success, (8) political background, (9) religious background, (10) ethnic background, and (11) s...   [tags: Psychology, First Impression]

The Lasting Effects of First Impressions Essay examples

- A first impression is a lasting impression. When judging someone based on their looks or first impression, many times personality can change someone’s opinion. People judge automatically, within the first three seconds of a new encounter, even if it is just a glance. People review your visual and behavioral appearance from head to toe. They observe your demeanor, appearance, body language and even assess your grooming and accessories—purse, watch, clothing. Once the first impression is made it is virtually unchangeable....   [tags: social]

Essay about First Impressions and Human Behavior

- Imagine attending a college graduation ceremony and the man giving the keynote address strolls with hunched shoulders up to the podium. His hair has dreadlocks and stands on end in several places. His clothes look as if he quickly picked them out of the bargain bin of the local Goodwill Store. He is wearing a striped sports jacket, plaid golf pants and white, athletic socks with his bright, Bronco orange Crocs. Based solely on this information, will the audience listen intently and gain inspiration from the knowledge this man has to impart....   [tags: Sociology]

Essay on The Importance of First Impressions

- Making a good first impression is of the utmost importance, for research studies indicate that the impression made in the first few seconds of an initial encounter has a long-lasting effect and very rarely changes over time. Positive first impressions can be made by being well-dressed and groomed, by being confident and self-assured, and by smiling and making eye contact when meeting someone for the first time. In order to provide a thorough and comprehensive analysis of this issue, first impression dynamics will be examined in a variety of contexts such as dating, social events, academic settings, and job interviews, and the impact of first impressions on business activities ranging from sa...   [tags: psychology, perceptions]

Essay about The Influence of First Impressions

- “Without wearing any mask we are conscious of, we have a special face for each friend.” (Holmes, O.W., 1911) If life is a stage, then as casual observers with first impressions of our friend John, we are also actors in the play. I may cast my first impressions about John. Moreover, how we view these two situations have as much to say about us than it does about John. How Do First Impressions Strike Us. Our brain processes and integrates a variety of input factors that help us arrive at a “first impression.” This “brain process” functions like a road map that assists us in reaching a conclusion, with a high amount of accuracy in as little as thirty seconds (Schiller, D., Freeman, J., Mitc...   [tags: Hierarchal Needs, Scenarios]

Essay on First Impressions

- We all have been in a situation where we meet new people for the first time. Either enrolling in a new school, interviewing for a job, or just simply going to a party and meeting new people who happen to be at the party as well; our lives are filled with first encounters and we develop impressions about those people we encounter. To simplify the understanding a first impression is “like a Polaroid picture” (Flora,2004). They are brief snapshots that we use to gain physical knowledge about the new people we make....   [tags: Psychology]

- Dalai Lama said “Sometimes one creates a dynamic impression by saying something, and sometimes one creates as significant an impression by remaining silent.” (Dalai Lama, n.d.) Some people are of the belief that first impressions are lasting and hard to overcome if they are bad. As a leader a person can’t judge solely on the basis of a first impression nor can they ignore them. A lot can be gathered from first impressions and that knowledge should be kept while obtaining a better understanding of that individual....   [tags: Dalai Lama, Henrik Ibsen]

Essay on First Impressions

- It’s generally accepted in our society that “first impressions are lasting.” (Great Quotes) I find it interesting that most people, myself included, don’t always plan to make a good first impression in their day-to-day lives. We usually work hard at first impressions for job interviews, first dates, and presentations but rarely consider that we are constantly making first impressions on others. It may be the checkout clerk in a grocery store, the secretary answering the phone, or the person we cut off from a parking space....   [tags: Interpersonal Communication]
