It’s the Final Countdown
Will the world meet it’s maker December 21st, 2012? Is it the end of civilization as it is known? Rumors swirl through modern society, with new conspiracy theories unveiling each second. New York City is littered with the homeless baring signs declaring the end being nigh. Several different groups each have prophesied a day of doom upcoming in December. There are many possible outcomes but only one can happen and the other outcomes will be dust in the wind until the next scare or will vanish with the world. Out of several outcomes, it most likely is that the world will go on.
One theory that has emerged is one of scientific proportions. Many astronomers and astrologers have been preparing for an immensely strange apocalypse. Some hold a firm belief that there will be a phenomena in the galaxy where all of the planets align, leaving Earth to bear some of the consequences. The alignment of the planet is supposedly going to cause mass environmental destruction. Humans would have to rebuild their lives from the ground up, changing on how every thing is done. Farming will have to be completely redone along with just how people would have to go outside. With the alignment, all wireless communications would cease to exist for the brief alignment, causing all progress to be lost. NASA has different ideas. According to NASA, “Each December the Earth and sun align with the approximate center of the Milky Way Galaxy but that is an annual event of no consequence. (1)” Their scientists say that there is no possible planet alignment for several more decades, stating that those astronomers and astrologists are fraud or have succumbed to insanity. Many skeptics believe that this theory will not come true. Ma...

...troversy surronds this date, with some betting their lives on it. The final countdown is not forthcoming this year. Many years from now, it could be a possibility, centuries away. The cause would probably be of humans own doing, with the environment deteriorating and those who inhabit the Earth not caring enough to pay attention. But to answer the beginning question of if the world will meet it’s maker, stand firm on no the end is not nigh. Rest easy good citizens, lives of many are safe for now.

I am neither a pessimist nor a doomsday activist, but I do justify the reality of a situation being presenting itself. How can we expect to remedy the problem if no one even knows what the problem is? We must choose if we care enough to alleviate the environmental impacts or continue on with our daily lives? That is the conundrum of the 21st
Shrouded in mythology and mystery, and frequently solely the focus of academic and archaeological exploration, the ancient Maya remain relatively misunderstood by contemporary culture-one needs to look no further than the endless array of alarmist 2012-centric texts that topped last year's best-seller lists, or commercialized salves and potions touting antiquated Mayan cures, to experience the general misconceptions about the remarkable civilization first
We are also over concerned with now compared to the future which I believe to be more important . The world is to caught up in todays tinkerings to think about the end effects.
Everyone has his own sentiment of when he thinks the world will end some said it would happen at the turn of the millennium but it didn’t, others have hypothesized random dates throughout history But none have come true as to date. Jesus teaches that many calamities will mark the Second Coming and the Apocalypse. Kevin Knight writes in an article for New Advent and in it he says, “They are meant to foreshadow not to tell the day or the time, and will include. 1) The General Preaching of the Christian Religion. 2) The Conversion of the Jews. 3) The Return of Enoch and Elijah. 4) A Great Apostasy or revolt against the Catholic Faith. 5) The Reign of Antichrist who will be a powerful adversary of Christ. He will seduce the nations by his wonders, and persecute the Church. 6) Extraordinary Perturbations of Nature. 7) The Universal Conflagration. 8) The Trumpets of Resurrection will awaken the dead to resurrection. 9) The sign of the Son of Man Appearing in Heaven or in a wonderful cross of light.”

The word Armageddon can evoke some scary thoughts. The word means to most people the destruction or severe alteration, of life, as we know it on the planet Earth. One thing is for sure, the possibility of Armageddon actually happening is very real, and we as a species are not ready for it. Movies entertain us with their version of Armageddon while governments and scientist research and plan to avoid it. The public at large remains oblivious to dangers that are fact not fiction. God will in some form show us that in the grand scheme of things we are very small and there is nothing we can do to prevent the inevitable.

I’ve always wondered how the human race will go extinct. I’m not a survivalist or have a cabin in the middle of nowhere with canned food that will last me the next five years. I don’t spend hours pondering this question or losing sleep, but I am simply interested in this puzzle. The answer to this question can have numerous answers, but no one knows for certain how it will happen. The discussion about how the world will end would lead me to present this topic at a UVA Flash Seminar if given the opportunity.

Earth will outlive us all and when the human species eventually dies out, Earth will still be here fixing itself from the damage we have caused, yet continuing with the natural disasters. I do admit, we are polluting the planet, but there will always be some sort of life on Earth even if humans are not. People should not be too worried about destroying the planet because it will heal itself. If people begin to pollute it too much, Earth will kill us off. Roderick Nash, along with many other people, underestimates the power of the Earth. It can take care of itself just like how it has been for over a billion years.

”(-Hagel). The article by Jared Diamond called “The End of The World as We Know Them” explains to us we have the chance to change our future from previous civilianization like Mayans. One alternative that we can infer is a stronger focus on benefiting the earth and not our self. For example instead of using war to gain more resources from other countries and cause more damage to other civilization, we should all live in peace and live natural energy from the sun like solar panels. If we keep the ground that we live on, we can keep our lives that we dwell on.
Throughout the years, climate change has become a topic that people are getting more concerned about as the years go by. Climate change has an effect on the temperature around the world which cause nature to change drastically. Cars, airplanes, coal and other man-made things are considered to enemies to climate change. Although it is a theory, other people think that climate change is something that is occurring naturally by nature. Mankind has been accused of causing different amounts of damage to the world in different ways. Humans ca/ sxsxxxxxxxxxxxssx;2nnot predict what nature has planned for us so we cannot jump to conclusions on the way nature works. Climate change could be affected by something on earth or may not, but it is yet to be
