You know school is right around the corner when August here and you begin seeing all the back-to-school sales on the TV. This is the time of year most students dread and parents become excited. This excitement cannot be said for all parents. In the article Back-to-School Worries for Gay Parents by Roni Caryn Rabin, discusses the lack of excitement gay and lesbian parents have when it’s time to send their children to school. Our society is built on a heteronormative foundation, so most heterosexual parents don’t have worries sending their children to school because most of the things that happen are things that can be dealt with in time because that’s “normal.” For gay or lesbian parents they have different worries, some of which are the same as Kevin Dix, parent to his 6-year-old daughter, when he says “I’m a bit of a worrywart when it comes to my daughter, I don’t want her to be impacted by my homosexuality. If that is someone’s issue, it is their issue with me, not her” (Rabin 2015). There are many LGBTQ activists, allies and researchers that try to shed light on these LGBTQ issues and are not usually recognized by people who are not part of, or allies with the LGBTQ community. …show more content…

Rachel Farr who is an assistant professor in developmental psychology at the University of Kentucky. Dr. Farr directed an 8 yearlong study on adopted children being placed in an LGBT home, two mothers or two fathers. The results of her study show that children are very curious about the world in which we live because since birth they’ve known that everyone has one mom and one dad. The children within Dr. Farr’s study in LGBT homes tend to have positive outlooks about families, recognizing that families are different and that no matter what a family sticks together.
