My calling in life has always been clear to me, in my heart I have always known that I wanted to become a part of the medical field. Ever since I was a little girl I have admired the men and women who work in this field. Their drive and compassion to help those in need inspire me to become a future Registered Nurse. One of the many individuals within this field who has inspired me is Alfred Lopez a Registered Nurse at the California Institution for Women. He is 45 years old and has received his Bachelor 's degree in nursing from UCLA. As a nurse he provides exemplary care without judgement or bias towards those who are convicted as felons and criminals. He is a respectable and good natured man that lends an unbiased helping hand to all, despite what they have done in this life. This is why I strive to one day join the field of nursing because in this field every patient is treated equally among one another.

On a cloudless and dry October day I made my way to the California Institution for Women a female-only state prison located in the city of Chino, in the San Bernardino County. Its population consists of approximately 2,155 female inmates that have committed a variety of different felonies from robbery to murder. As I stepped out of my car and walked towards the entrance of the institution, I could feel a sense of dread making its way down my spine. Before I knew it I was inside the institution being greeted by the first security checkpoint, where my purse was searched and I had to walk through a full body metal detector. After I was permitted through the first security door, I walked into a lobby where I would be admitted into the prison.

Once inside the lobby the front desk officer who was armed with a 38...

... and seeing someone hanging”, looking up he sighed and then smiled, “but everyday you get to go home on time without seeing someone die is a good day”.
As I left the prison and walked toward my car, I knew that this experience would stay with me forever. My uncle showed me that the medical field is filled with ups and downs. That becoming a nurse requires traits such as empathy, professionalism, diligence and compassion. These are all traits that my uncle withholds . Even though I don’t wish to pursue a nursing career in the prison system, I hope that by following in my uncle’s footsteps that I can one day find myself working as a nurse at the Children’s Hospital. In the future I may not have the ability to cure someone of an illness or disease but I know that by utilizing my skills and knowledge to the best of my ability I can still make a difference in their life.
