1. What relationships and/or experiences influenced your decision to enter the field of Social Work? A personal experience that influenced my decision to enter the field of social work is when I joined the military after high school. While serving, I was able to assist the Director of the Combined Federal Campaign. This is a major campaign that is sponsored by the military and United Way, and it is geared towards raising money for nonprofit agencies. I enjoyed visiting various agencies, organizing events, as well as educating people about the available resources within their communities. This was definitely a season of growth; furthermore, after careful research I discovered the field of social work was the best profession for me. This was a life changing event and this exposure changed my life forever.
2. What are your career objectives, and explain how you envision using your graduate level Social Work education? (Include details about your philosophy of Social Work practice, the population you would like to work with, and the type of intervention you would like to provide). Within the field of social work, there are several opportunities for growth and advancement and I plan to take advantage of them. Within the next five to six years, I plan to complete my Master of Social Work and then I plan to pursue a Ph.D. in Women Studies/Gender Studies. My goal is to create a non-profit agency that inspires women and girls to move beyond their ordinary selves by helping them embrace their extraordinary self and this leads me to my ultimate goal, which is obtaining the most advanced social work certification, Licensed Clinical Social Work (LCSW).

...g them engaged during the group process. I am working on discovering my strengths so I can learn to highlight those areas when it appears as if my personality is creating a deficit. For example, creating more interactive activities when facilitating groups so that being laid back does not translate to low energy. If group members perceive you as being uninterested in the group process this will have an impact on how well you engage within the group setting, and ultimately the chances of building a rapport will diminish. Also, I am self-aware, however, I struggle with balancing my time and taking care of myself. I have the tendency to put everyone’s needs before my own. In this helping field, the consequence of such actions will result in professional and personal burn-out. I realize that I have to be intentional about the time I invest in myself and my health.
