On Monday, I went to meet up with a woman named Clara Angel to discuss how she feels about the field of mental health. Ms. Angel is a License Mental Health Counselor (LMHC). She got her Master’s degree at New York University (NYU). Her office is magnificent. The office is on the corner of University Plaza and 11th street, on the fourth floor. When I entered the office I noticed that I was walking to the Washington Square Institute for Psychotherapy and Mental Health (WSI).
The receptionist upon entering was very nice and helpful. I was early to our meeting so I waited a few minute for Ms. Angel in the receptionist area. After a Few minutes of waiting, I heard a door open behind me and my name called. I stood to shake Ms. Angel 's hand and say thank you for meeting me for this interview but, she walked through the doorway into the hall. She gave me a small “follow me” motion and started to move

Instead of giving me an in-depth answer I was expecting, she simply stated she liked it. To follow up this question and in hopes to get her to open up, I asked how her clients feel about the music and if anyone of them has ever mentioned it to her in a negative or positive manner. Simply she stated no they have never said anything about the music and let the topic drop.
I asked her what she thought about the field of Mental Health and her plans for her career within the field. She stated everything was great within the field of mental health. That there was no negatives. As for her career, she plans to stay right where she is because this is her passion. I attempted to ask her about her time at NYU and if she had any recommended for courses or professors. She simply stated she did not. It is good to have a positive outlook on life but this was unrealistic and unhelpful to me. I was not able to get any sort of understand of the field I am going
From reading and reflecting her personal experience and journey with her sister, Pamela, I acquired a personal outlook of the deteriorating effects of mental illness as a whole, discovering how one individual’s symptoms could significantly impact others such as family and friends. From this new perspective mental health counseling provides a dominate field within not only individuals who may suffer mental illness such as Pamela, but also serve as a breaking point for family and friends who also travel through the illness, such as Carolyn.

Susan Pasco, the associate director at the Syracuse University counselling center, was involved in the hiring process for the position. She explained that Asiaka stood out as she seemed to have a fresh prospective to bring to the job with great experience. “Kristelle was passionate and excited, and she was young but had expertise already in doing mental health wellness work in a university setting.”
On May 25th 2016 I officially started an internship with Montgomery County’s Department of Mental Hygiene. The department consists of one hard working woman named Sara Borenko who was my supervisor and boss throughout this internship. One of the main duties of Sara’s job is the funding of community programs that are aimed towards helping the mental health community. In fall 2015 I took a class called Community Psychology and while working at this internship; I applied what I had learned from that class and used it to my advantage. Some of the lessons I applied included social oppression, community organizing, stress and coping, and emotional support. Before taking this internship, I didn’t realize how much my county had to offer as for services. I’m inspired by the community and its strides towards helping the mentally ill. The field of clinical mental health is one of great reward, but also one of grave responsibility. It is the duty of the counselor to provide the client with a safe environment and an open mind, in order to foster a healthy therapeutic relationship. The majority of mental health counselors would never intentionally harm their clients; however; good intentions are not enough to ensure that wrong will not occur. The ethical expectations and boundaries are regulated by both laws and professional codes. When discussing ethics, one must realize there are two categories, mandatory and aspirational. (Corey, Corey & Callanan, 2007)
Although the experience was nerve-racking, I believe that I did a very good job. I was able to collect the majority of the information that she was telling me while asking follow up questions. However, it was more to balance than I had expected. It was difficult asking questions and attempting to record enough information to complete my assignment. As the conversation continued, I got interested in her life stories and professional examples and noticed I had stopped taking notes. I also felt the need to make constant eye contact to show I was alert and aware of what she was saying, which brought challenges to my note taking. This interview process made me feel excited for the future. It was an intriguing opportunity to know that one day I will be able to positively impact lives the way Fultz does. To improve my interview skills, I would ask if I could record the conversation. This will allow me to interact more with the health professional while also consuming a maximum amount of information. I wish I had thought about recording this conversation prior to the interview, because Fultz spoke beautifully about her passion as a social worker, and I wish I was able to directly quote her in this
She is a twenty-two-year-old Guest services Agent who is presently working at the Sheraton Hotel in Queens, New York. During my interview with her I discovered that she and her family of four migrated from Jamaica in search of a better life here in the United States of America. She portrayed a warm and friendly personality, as such it was easy for me to talk with her about self-identity. She informed me that while she was in Jamaica she excelled in High School and went on to University where she studied Health Science. Her reason for choosing that field was because her mother was very much involved in her development and encouraged her to stick to the sciences where she could specialize in becoming a medical doctor in the future. Listening to her, I realized that her decision at the time was based on what her mother had in mind for her and not necessarily what she wanted to become. I questioned her if she had figured out what she wanted to do with her life then, she clearly had no idea therefore she just followed her parent instruction. She pointed out that her mother who played a significant role in her life, always instilled in her the importance of a good education and that becoming a doctor would be the right choice. The mental health assessment is a crucial part in everyday nursing care as it evaluates an individual’s mental condition to assess for risk factors of mental illnesses and provide optimal care and treatment. My experience in mental health clinical was very different from any other clinical I had before. In a mental health clinical setting, I am not only treating client’s mental illnesses, I am also treating their medical problems such as COPD, diabetes, chronic renal failure, etc. Therefore, it is important to prepare for the unexpected events. In this mental health clinical, I learned that the importance of checking on my clients and making sure that they are doing fine by performing a quick head-to toes assessment at the beginning of my shift. I had also learned that client’s mental health illness had a huge impact on their current medical illness.
I feel like the last two weeks have personally been physically and mentally draining. However, some of the techniques we have been practicing in class have become part of my coping methods. Besides midterms, papers and other school related projects, I have been struggling with my health. I was in and out of the hospital a few times—including impromptu emergency room visits—and fights with family members. I have been less focused on my activism and social justice work and my mindfulness, or attempts at being mindful, have been targeted at my personal life instead. Although we discuss mindfulness in context of our work in social justice, everything we discuss applies to our daily interactions.
To begin with, Mental Disorder is a medical condition that disrupts a person’s thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others and daily living. Just like chronic disease, a mental illness is a medical condition that often results in a diminished capacity for coping with the ordinary demands of life. Mental disorders are severe depending upon the severity of the illness. An illness can be classified as mild, moderate, or severe.
Mental health refers to the state of individuals psychologically, emotionally and socially. Mental health affects a person’s emotions, feelings, thoughts, and sections when exposed to different situations. Furthermore, mental health is responsible for a person’s reaction to stress and other social conditions. Generally, mental health affects how a person relates to others and their ability to understand and interact with them. Therefore, problems that affect a person’s mental health affect the abilities to socialize, their feelings, moods, reaction to situations. The person experiencing mental health problem may portray different behaviors when confronted with different issues. Mental health issues have several
