Growing up when I was younger was fun and challenging. Being a military brat I was always bouncing from place to place. My childhood life really took a change when my dad retired after serving 20 years in the Navy. At the age of 13 just stepping into my teen years my dad retired and we moved back to Memphis, TN where I was originally born. [Your father retired when he was 13? Please re-word to avoid confusion] During this time in life [omit] it was very difficult because I had to transition from school systems, different kind of peers, and a different environment that I was surrounded by. During This time I went thru [through] many challenges that have much to do with the person I am today. Work on your thesis—it should focus on your early experiences with literacy and everything should support it. I remember before my dad retired from grades five to eight [this sounds as though your father retired from grades five to eight—re-word] being stationed in Aviano, Itay I went to a Department of Defense school. Going to a Department of Defense school was [a] nice experience with the school facility being well built and the inside of the school building was also [omit] built with marble floors, and marble walls[;] it was like something out of a Picasso painting. The teaching at the school was different as well because the teachers taught at a faster pace and there in a way [omit] I kind of [omit] felt like I learned a little more. Now transitioning to a public school from a Department of Defense school was like doing a complete 360 and then stopping and being dizzy not knowing what is going on around you. Re-word The teaching was slower mainly because teachers would constantly get interrupted by classroom behavior. Due to this behavior from the students teachers always had to stop what they were teaching to attend to whatever behavior was going on in the classroom. The school facility was nothing like when I went to the Department of Defense School. The facility was very poor and it was very old and dirty. The windows we had that when in the school were plastic the school looked kind of like a prison. Re-word Though going to this public school had its cons it also had it’s pros as well. The teachers seemed like they actually cared more about the students they taught.
The military since the Colonial Era has been an impetus for social reform in the United States. The Revolutionary War afforded Black Americans an opportunity to escape from the toils of slavery and fight for freedom. Some Black Americans even earned their freedom by fighting for the Colonists, but still the freedom they fought for wasn’t their own. However, the military was responsible for the freedom of many slaves and some of these freed slaves became legendary soldiers like Salem Poor. His performance in battle gave credibility for future arguments about blacks being allowed to serve.
A Soldier, a Sailor an Airman and a Marine got into an argument about which service was the greatest. The arguing became so heated that they eventually ended up killing each other. Soon, they found themselves at the Pearly Gates of Heaven They meet St Peter and decided that only he would be the ultimate source of truth and honesty, so they osked him: "St Peter which branch of the American Armed Forces is the best?" St. Peter instantly replied: "I can't answer that. But I will ask God what he thinks next time I see him. Some time later, the four saw St. Peter again and reminded him of the question and asked if he was able to get an answer. Suddenly a sparkling white dove landed on St. Peter's shoulder. In the dove's beak is a note guilded with gold dust. St. Peter says to the four men, "Your answer from the Boss. Let's see what he says." St. Peter opens the note. Trumpets blare and gold dust drifts into the air. Harps play crescendos and St. Peter begins to read the note aloud to the four young men:
One of Hoonah City Schools’ biggest issues was the high turnover rate of staff members. The staff leaving so frequently prevented long-lasting relations between the students and staff, so students distrusted and disrespected staff members. The remoteness of the community also made ordering supplies for the school more difficult, so teachers had to buy much of their own supplies for the schools and the students. Additionally, many staff members had to fulfill obligations and responsibilities not included in their job title since the school did not have enough employees. I also heard about the the school’s funding issues, as the number of students seemed to be decreasing and the budget was at threat of being slashed. I had never experienced a school with so many fundamental issues, and it became a bit overwhelming to hear problem after problem with no clear solutions. By witnessing the effects of the above issues in Hoonah and Hoonah City Schools, I became hyper-aware of many of my privileges that I ignored in my day-to-day
The story of my history as a writer is a very long one. My writing has come full circle. I have changed very much throughout the years, both as I grew older and as I discovered more aspects of my own personality. The growth that I see when I look back is incredible, and it all seems to revolve around my emotions. I have always been a very emotional girl who feels things keenly. All of my truly memorable writing, looking back, has come from experiences that struck a chord with my developing self. This assignment has opened my eyes, despite my initial difficulty in writing it. When I was asked to write down my earliest memory of writing, at first I drew a blank. All of a sudden, it became very clear to me, probably because it had some childhood trauma associated with it.
...ollege, because I am excited to learn new subjects, just as I am given the opportunity to sign up to attend classes that contain information that I am interested in. As I began this paper, I explained the process that I went through as I learned to talk. Literacy isn’t only the experiences one has with reading and writing, it is so much more than that. My literacy story has been enhanced through my interests, experiences and life. During my high school years, I always found myself taking care of children, whether in a school setting or babysitting. I found that I work well with younger children and that it’s amazing to see how they learn. This has also always interested me as I have reflected on my own life. Therefore, my literacy story continues as my interests have developed from not only adventure and animals, but also to children and my future teaching career.
Going to school was probably one of my favorite things to do besides playing doll with my older sister. My sister went to preschool and kinder in Mexico, but once I was going to start kinder my family decided to move back to California. Through all of my elementary years, I would spend half school year here in Salinas and the other half over there in Michoacán. We would go back and forth because my dad’s work was only in certain seasons. When I was about 10 years old my family decided to officially move and stay in Salinas. I was still young at age, so everything was a really big change for me. One of the biggest changes was in my education, going to an all-English elementary school. Being a native Spanish speaker, totally new to the English language was quite a challenge. What no one really saw was the struggles that came along with my education, both in Mexico and here in the U.S. The education system in Mexico was totally different to the one here in California, and to this day they’re still not similar to one another. Growing up in these two different places, trying to adapt to a different culture really made going to school somewhat a different experience than others, since I went to school in two different
My life changed forever at the age of nine in the country of Iraq. I learned our house was being threatened to be bombed and we had to leave immediately. I was strangled with grief, anguish, and uncertainty. These defining challenges have been forever etched on my heart and mind. This pivotal night has been responsible in shaping me into the person I am today and altering the trajectory of my education. After fleeing Iraq, we relocated in Jordan where we lived for four years before finally being relocated in the United States. While we were in Jordan, there was a period of three months where I was unable to go to school because we were waiting on immersion information from the United Nations. My biggest hurdle was learning the English language and adapting culturally while starting high school. I was immersed into a poorly rated school where I not only had to worry about communicating effectively with my teachers, but also achieving my goals academically. Adapting to a new school system where I struggled with social acceptance was also very emotionally challenging. All of these factors contributed to a tough adjustment.
...at our kitchen table until this very day, I have seen firsthand an improvement in grades, self-discipline, self-esteem, attendance and an all-around pride in each one of their eyes in regards to their schooling. All of this cannot be coincidence; these outstanding achievements have been seen by not only myself, each teacher that has had them in class has reached out to my fiancé and I in one way or another to voice their positive observations in the way my children view school as a whole. The fact that these improvements started the day I went back to school, have been observed by not just my fiancé and I but all the staff at their school can only lead me to one conclusion and that is that parents going back to school creates a positive learning environment for their children which results in many positive characteristics that benefit their day to day school lives.
The military, mainly focuses on the physical and mental preparation of veterans’ in order for them to witness combat. It is known that veterans’ who serve in the armed forces witness and experience violence, dead and trauma. Despite the effort of the military to prepare soldiers for combat, it is not sufficient for veterans’ to live a normal life after deployment. Many of the veterans’ who deploy are expose to a deeper inner battle within themselves when they return to their homelands. Smith and Gala True, point out that, we should consider how reintegration to civilian society requires soldiers to navigate and interpret new ways of being in the social world. We contend that the struggle to resolve contrasting identities—what we call warring
Immigrants in the United States have made an immense contribution to the United States military. In all branches of the military service such as the army, navy, marines and the airfare, immigrants contribute an encouraging percentage of the military population. However, the military cannot reach its goals without immigrants because the country is highly dependent on immigrants as far as defense is concerned. “Over the past eight years, Congress has amended military related enlistment and naturalization rules to allow expanded benefits for immigrants and their families and encourage recruitment of immigrants into the U.S. Armed Forces. The U.S. military has also implemented new programs to encourage the enlistment and rapid naturalization of non‐citizens who serve honorably during
Topic Sentence 1- Daniel Hale Williams had a rough childhood growing up with no money to educate himself with, and being African-american made the goals he hoped to achieve twice as harder.
When I was 2 years old my parents divorced, my white mom who had taken some community college courses remarried my white step-dad who only completed a high school education. Due to my parents’ divorce I primarily grew up with my mother and stepfather and this is the household that I will focus on throughout my essay. My parents (mother and step-dad) worked low-waged sales jobs most of my life, but we faced out hardest times when both of my parents were laid off in the 2008 economic crisis. In my household, my family struggled to make ends meet, we lived paycheck to paycheck, gained excessive amounts of debt and heavily relied on social programs. Throughout high school due to the stresses of my home I involved myself in unhealthy habits like
Agatha Christie once said, “One of the luckiest things that can happen to you in life is, I think, to have a happy childhood.” Childhood is the best part of everyone’s life. It is supposed to be a time of enjoyment, innocence, and exploration. My childhood was an unforgettable experience. I got to encounter different things in unusual ways. There was nothing to stress about, I almost had no duties or issues. However, my childhood was different from others because unlike other children, I spent my most treasured years of life in the boarding school for almost fourteen years where I was raised and taught valuable lessons about life such as disciplines and manners. I have some of my greatest memories from back then which will never be forgotten. I will always cherish these memories of my childhood because I have learned a lot from it and it made me the person I am today.
If I wrote an autobiography of my life it probably be something like this. I was raised by both of my parents, Pauline and George Starks. My childhood was not the “ideal” childhood. Although, I thought it was until I met my husband and we compared his to mine. Some things that happened to me did nit happen in his life. For instance, as a child my parents move from place to place. They were big gamblers and was always moving to relocate running from loan sharks and people that they owed money. They would borrow money, sell anything to get to a place where they could gamble. During that time as a child me and my four sibling were put into so many schools I can not count them all. My mother had an elementary education, however she was good at
I’m going to write about my past life and how it has influenced me now that I am older. Most of the bad things I did and most of the good things I did while I was growing up.
