Agriculture is also known as farming. It is the producing of food, fiber, feed, and other goods from the growing and harvesting of plants and animals. Agriculture is used everywhere. We use agriculture products everyday starting with the clothes we dress in to the sheets we sleep in. When you think of agriculture, think of the 5 F's. Food, fabric, forestry, farming, and flowers is agriculture.
The Fertile Crescent is an area in Western Asia. The area consists in the regions of Mesopotamia and the Levant, confined by the Syrian Desert to the Anatolian of the north. The cradle of civilization is what this area is refereed to. The region is where the birthplace of the wheel and writing took place. The Fertile Crescent was formulated by James Henry Breasted who is an archaeologist from the University of Chicago. Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, and the Palestine territories all have territory within the Fertile Crescent. The southeastern end of Turkey and western part of Iran is also included.

Evidence states that irrigation was started in Egypt and Mesopotamia starting in the 6th millennium BC. In Persia, the oldest method of irrigation is still being used called the Qantas. The irrigation process started with digging and repairing the canals. This helped when the Nile River was high. Dikes were on the land resembling a checkerboard. Unexpected problems occurred with the high flows of water. The dikes were washed away. When the waters were low, the land dried up.

It illustrates the interaction between human and environment, development of technology, settling patterns, and how natural resources gave some lands advantages over others. Spanning from the eastern shore of the Mediterranean to the Persian Gulf and including areas such as Egypt and Mesopotamia, the Fertile Crescent was a massive beast - a force to be reckoned with. Ahead of its time, the Fertile Crescent was a mass packed with trade routes, powerful empires, and various religions. It’s likely that a person would infer the diversity of cultures would provide stark differences between each other. However that is not the case. From the early beginnings of the Fertile Crescent in 2350 BCE onward three major characteristics were constantly displayed: slavery, the search for mankind's purpose, and the conglomerate of religious authorities, Kings, and the Military.

In the south Babylonia (irrigation is vital) and north Assyria (agriculture is possible with rainfall and wells). By 4000 B.C.E., people had settled in large numbers in the river-watered lowlands of Mesopotamia and Egypt. Due to the rising amount of exports, manufacturing capability, power, and wealth, America began to expand to other parts of the world and used overseas markets to send its goods. Farming became on of the most competitive jobs around this time. Farmers had many problems with the industrialization occurring in this country at the time. The blessing and curse of the Agricultural Revolution is advocated with its augmentation and dissemination. Taking the stipulative definition of “blessing” and “curse” from the original premise, one can only superimpose the layman’s terms of “negative” and “positive”. Upon examination of the two classifications within the Neolithic Period and ancient Mesopotamian civilization one can confirm the premise. Therefore, the agriculture revolution was a blessing and a curse for humanity. Human society began to emerge in the Neolithic Period or the New Stone Age. This new age began around 9,000 B.C.E. by the development of agriculture in the region surrounding the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and what is commonly referred to as “The Fertile Crescent” located in West Asia.1 The very development of agriculture had benefited humans by no longer having to move about in search of wild game and plants. Unencumbered by nomadic life humans found little need to limit family size and possessions and settled in a single location for many years. One negative aspect of this settling is that the population increased so much so that wild food sources were no longer sufficient to support large groups. Forced to survive by any means necessary they discovered using seeds of the most productive plants and clearing weeds enhanced their yield.2 This also lead humans to develop a wider array of tools far superior to the tools previously used in the Paleolithic Period or Old Stone Age. Food and fibre productivity rose due to new technologies, mechanization, increased chemical use, specialization and government policies that favoured maximizing production. These changes allowed fewer farmers with reduced labour demands to produce the majority of the food and fibre.
