HeForShe is a United Nations campaign encouraging people worldwide to support the idea of gender equality, especially males, as gender inequality is not only faced by women. Many have grown to believe supporting the feminist movement means man hating. However, men also face gender inequality and are limited in their life experiences due to societies expectations of them. Emma Watson, who is an United Nations Woman Goodwill Ambassador, and the face of the HeForShe campaign precisely states that this plays a large role in why there is a stigma around feminism, and thinks that it is extremely important from the movement to have this thought removed. Watson goes on to explain how construed the understanding of feminism has become, stating that feminism is, “the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. …show more content…

The campaign is fighting for gender equality worldwide. While many people believe that feminism is no longer a relevant movement, in the initial speech of the campaign, it was made clear that there is not a single country in this world that has accomplished complete gender equality. In fact, women’s rights were not begun to be thought of as synonymous with human rights until 1995, when Hillary Clinton made a speech at the Fourth World for Women Conference in China (McDonald, 2014). The campaign calls upon men and boys to become advocates in the fight against gender inequality, including male, because not only women need to be fighting to achieve equality, because it is not solely women who are being treated unequally. However, thing movement has been under scrutiny for some feel that it does not properly coincide with the feminist movement, and the third wave of feminism currently under way.
