In today’s society, generation and generations later women still face discrimination as it may not be as obvious it is still there. The most common and everyday discrimination that woman face is in the media that we have been if not surrounded, drowned by. When growing up the term feminism was a term that was thrown around and something that people around me seemed to be educated on but it truly never made sense to me before. As seen in the Devon Carbado piece from the course, in order for sexism to happen there has to be male privilege. Dr. Pepper, a brand many have heard of implied “It’s not for women” when introducing their new “Ten” product. Now, the only question that I have is why, what about this product can possibly make it not for women? Could it effect pregnancy, could it cause some weird breast disfiguration, could it make a uterus explode? In my opinion, these would be reasons this would not be for women, but Dr. Pepper didn’t bother to explain to us what made this not for women and while doing so they forgot to explain the difference in manly and womanly calories, because apparently there are only manly calories available in this product. The sad part about this advertisement is that there is nothing at all subtle about it. In a world where sexual intercourse is a common part of the human life it should be based upon intimacy and the exchange for attraction to one another. One of our beloved car makers, BMW, has taken the idea of sexual intercourse to whole other level. With the obvious happening in the advertisement, the women’s face is covered entirely by a magazine of a BMW car; implying that instead of enjoying the female he is with but instead he enjoying and is focusing on the car to get him where he wants to be. While this advertisement is not directly saying this to women, the placement of the magazine on her face, which he would be looking at he is focused on the magazine instead. The overall message I receive through this advertisement is the idea that men enjoy the luxury of cars as much, if not more than looking at the woman they are having intercourse with.
