America has reached a peak in its debate over gun control and it now comes the time to make the decision on whether or not Americans should be banned from the owning and manufacturing specific high-capacity semi-automatic weapons, otherwise known as assault weapons: including rifles, pistols, and shotguns. There are always two sides to each debate, those that oppose and those that support. In this case, do you support an assault weapon ban or perhaps you oppose this ban and feel that this violates the second amendment in the Constitution where it states that Americans have right to bear arms? Let me ask you this though, do you know all the facts and have you weighed all the opinions on each side so that you may make an educated decision? It is important that Americans understand what weapons are included in this ban for example, the ban does not included all semi-automatic weapons, why a ban on these high capacity weapons is necessary, and how many lives it could possibly save if it is passed into law.
What exactly qualifies a firearm to be considered a semi-automatic weapon? Semi-automatic weapons were first introduced in 1885. They were created to only fire one shot when the trigger is pulled. However, this firearm automatically ejects the case of the fired shot and immediately loads the next cartridge, making it easier and faster to fire the following rounds. These rapid fire weapons make up twenty percent of the three million privately owned firearms in America. In 2012 alone, nearly five million new semi-automatic firearms were sold. These outstanding numbers of assault weapons flood our streets today. They have been proven to be easily accessible to dangerous, unstable people and have taken the lives so many Americans; men, women and children. As a result of so many incidents with these firearms, Congress is trying to pass a ban prohibiting the use of assault
In “Little Red Riding Hood vs. Guns” advertised by Moms Demand Action there is a saying at the top of the picture that reads “One child is holding something that’s been banned in America to protect them.” With one child holding a gun witch is not banned in America, and the other child is hold a “Little Red Riding Hood” book witch is banned in some schools across America. I believe that books shouldn’t be banned in the American school system because they teach children valuable lessons in life. Guns on the other hand should stay banned in American schools and instead of making sure some books stay out of schools the government should be making sure no one takes guns into the school buildings to prevent bad things from happening to children.
Enforcing an assault weapons ban can reduce the all-too-familiar occurrences of mass shooting and massacres. When Adam Lanza shot 26 people in Sandy Hook Elementary School..police say he largely relied upon a Bushmaster AR-15 "assault-type weapon," a semiautomatic rifle that could rapidly fire multiple high-velocity rounds. He was also equipped with magazines that held 30 bullets each (Plumer). As a chart from Princeton's Sam Wang shows, the number of people killed in mass shootings did go down in the years the [1994 Assault Weapons Ban] was in effect...and the number of mass shootings per year has doubled since the ban expired (Plumer). This statistic clearly shows the effectiveness of the ban passed by Congress and signed by former president Bill Clinton as part of the V...
Assault weapon control is becoming an unavoidable topic in the United States. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation more than nine hundred people have died from mass shootings in the past seven years and an assault rifle was used in twelve of the forty-three mass shootings in the past four years. The U.S. Department of Defense has long defined assault rifles as fully automatic rifles used for military purposes. The National Firearm Act of 1934 prohibited fully automatic weapons in the United States. The 1994 Assault Weapon Ban prohibited semi and fully automatic weapons and any weapon with military style characteristics. California Senator, Dianne Feinstein, is leading the charge in the American government to pass a bill that will limit the capacity of ammunition in a magazine and ban assault weapons that are too dangerous for public use. It is time for the American government to act swiftly and acknowledge the dangers assault rifles pose.
Firearms are classified into three broad types handguns, rifles, and shotguns. Rifles and shotguns are both considered “long guns.” A semi-automatic weapon fires one bullet each time the user pules the trigger, it will also eject the empty shell after its fired, and will automatically load another round into the gun. A automatic will fire multiple bullets as long as u hold the trigger down. Gun control has been a topic in government law making for years, although here recently gun control has been pushed for harder than ever. The major incident that started the fuss was the Sandy Hook school shooting in which they blame guns for a troubled young man killing six adults and twenty children. According to politics/policy a news paper article “Republicans have shot down any attempts to enact new Federal gun control laws and restrictions. Yet lawmakers have had some success in a handful of states such as Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, and New York have toughened back ground check rules or banned large capacity clips or weapons.”
The debate over firearms has been polarized for too long. Gun law is a never-ending issue because there hardly is any true debate. Americans (and even gun owners) do support the governments efforts to make sure guns are less dangerous in violent hands, but that is the main problem-the guns getting in the wrong human hands. Millions of law-abiding Americans do own and do enjoy their guns. But criminals and sometimes-disconcerted kids often use firearms to kill. The use of firearms has increased tremendously. An average day in Los Angeles is four people dying in a gun related crime and the United States faces approximately 87 deaths a day. There are more than 200 million guns in circulation in the United States and if you don’t own a firearm, chances are that your neighbor or friend does (Fineman 27). Sure, the Founding Fathers incorporated the Second Amendment as “the right to keep and bear arms,” but it did not give the distinction of using guns to kill more children and people than anywhere in the world.
News is all around us and is readily available to everyone. There are many flaws in the system that hurts the authenticity of the news when you see it. The media is indirectly part of the political system. Most news is either considered liberal or conservative by many.
The controversy over assault rifles is one of the most problematic issues related to the contributions of gangs, drug traffickers, and most criminal activity. More often than not, criminals have access to the weapons of their choice more easily than it should be. Getting them from licensed dealers, black markets, and family members’ homes, the availability of these militia weapons has become to effortless to obtain. The rise of criminal activity is part of the reason more than one-third of high school students have easy access to a weapon or gun. “Four out of five guns brought to school are actually brought from their own homes” (Page par 2). This is one of the biggest problems when faced with where criminals get their guns. They either steal them from relative’s homes, ask to borrow them, or steal them from licensed sellers. There are a lot of ways people can get guns. People who should not be able to purchase a firearm are allowed to, and illegal transactions are also a huge issue with criminals getting their guns. For all these reasons that is why Government should require restricted gun ownership to protect society, prevent crime, and allow for recreational use.
The second amendment to the US Constitution shows that it is unconstitutional to have complete and total gun control. The second amendment states that “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” This means that it is the right of an American citizen, abiding by the constitution, has the right to bear arms. Currently, there are over three hundred and seven billion people residing as American citizens. Within the homes of these Americans, forty five percent have a registered gun in their household. As a diverse nation, there are many reasons why there are guns located within a household. Sixty percent stated the gun is used for protection against int...
The second amendment states “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” This means that citizens have a right to bear arms, but since this amendment is not very clear there is some controversy. Many people argue that there shouldn’t be assault weapons because they are too powerful, or that this amendment was not intended to allow high powered assault weapons. There are many reasons on why assault rifles and large magazines should not be banned in the United States, including protection, defense, and past bans have not been effective.
In America guns have been a major topic of controversy and have been at the forefront of many political debates. Our forefathers created the Second Amendment, which allows American citizens the right to bear arms. There are many who support the Second Amendment right to bear arms, but there are also many who oppose it. Those who support the Second Amendment often do so because it is their fundamental right granted to them by the United States Constitution. The Second Amendment allows citizens to have the ability to protect themselves and their property from outside adversaries. In contrast, there is almost not a single day in America where gun related violence is not reported in the news. This leads many to believe that guns are a key contributor to the increase in violent and deadly crimes. This has caused many to push for stricter
Gun control has been a big debate across America due to the high crimes that involves a gun. Oklahoma has nearly half of the states citizen owning a gun, due to Oklahoma laws are so lay back on their citizens owning a gun. Crimes in this state is are near the top half of the United States that involve some sort of firearm. Today there are more tragic mass shootings that are occurring in the United States, in which some are involving small children. This is why the state of Oklahoma needs to put a stricter gun policy to the citizens of this state, so that the crime rates that involve a gun will go down.
In the past year there have been a worrying number of shootings in the United States. According to the Gun Violence Archive, there has been 290 mass shootings in 2015 (gunviolencearchieve.org). The United States needs to find a way to limit these numbers any way possible. Although guns are a “right” because of the second amendment, there is no logical explanation on why an assault weapon, which can shoot more than 10 bullets before needing to reload, are legal. Times have changed so the laws should too. The country no longer needs a militia when there is an army trained to protect us. The United States needs to better regulate guns, whether it is a better background checks or banning military-style weapons.
The United States has a long history with the establishment of gun control laws. In 1791, the 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, declaring “the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” New York passed the “Sullivan Act” in 1911, which allowed someone to purchase a gun with a permit required. This was just the beginning. In 1934, Congress passed the “National Firearms Act” which gave someone a $200 tax on gun sales requiring guns to be registered with the treasury. the “Gun Control Act” was passed in 1968, outlawing mail order sales of rifles and guns. Also, Bill Clinton signed the “Violent Crime Control” and “Law Enforcement Act” into law in 1994, which banned the manufacture and sales of assault weapons. The Supreme Court in 1997 declared background checks of the “Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act” unconstitutional which has left a huge impact on society, in which guns are getting in the hands of people with mental illness. Overall, gun control laws have had a long history with the United States, with much more to come.
Since the early days, gun control has been a never-ending debate. It is because of the fast increase in crime, the fight for the right to own a hand gun, the introduction of legislation for gun control in order reduce the crime in the United States, that this issue has been hotly debated in recent years. The streets of America are now a war zone especially right here were we live. ?Florida has the highest crime rate of any state and the sixth highest homicide level?(www.guncite.com). A sad fact but true. Many people feel that gun control violates their right to own a gun the second amendment says so: ?the right to bear arms?. I personally share that point of view for it would not be in the constitution to begin with. However, there is no doubt that something must be done in order to reduce violence and to make America a freer country to live in. I believe that gun control should not take place for it does not reduce crime, it only increases the debates and as an alternative there should be a stronger education.
The writers of the law lacked understanding of the actual weapon terminology, causing this ban to be too broad and confusing. In the year 2012, Senator Feinstein drafted a new ban for guns. She came up with a new definition of the term “assault weapon” thereby expanding the word beyond what the scope should be. This will ban the use of many more guns. Her definition includes the M1 Carbine, the model of the Ruger Mini-14, and almost all of the models of the SKS which are common and readily available guns. It also includes any “semia...
