In many ways Las Vegas can be an escape from stressful life. A vacation from all the worries and problems those plaques the people of America on a day to day life. Many people come to seek fame and fortune. Though when looking for this American dream comes at an expensive cost. Hunter S. Thompson paid this price the hard way and even then did not achieve the American dream he was searching for. In Thompson’s novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Thompson explains that drugs will change people even turn your best friends against you and those drugs can make you happy, but will not allow you fully achieve happiness that the American dream promises through allusions and symbolism.
Hunter S. Thompson was born on July 18, 1937 to an insurance agent named Jack Thompson and a young lady named Virginia Ray in Louisville, Kentucky. Thompson showed an early interest in reading and journalism according to Andie Tucher, Even going so far to creating a newspaper with some friends at an early period of schooling. When 1952 Thompson’s father died and this seemed to push him into an early encounter with the law with a variety of crimes, a mugging was the last of his luck putting him away for two months and missing his graduation. As Thompson got older he became a renowned journalist with his work involving the Hell’s Angel’s in 1966. Thompson’s next masterpiece came in 1971 with Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. This novel popularized Thompson’s version of journalism called Gonzo Journalism. (Tucher, Andie) Gonzo Journalism is best explained by Princeton University:

Fear and Loathing is complicated and simple at the same time. While it may be hard to fallow the story has a simple statement at the heart. Drugs are not the answer. Drugs will cause people who are considered best friends to kill each other with no remorse. To achieve true happiness one must work hard and not fall into the trap of drug use so many other people have fallen for.
