Hans Urs von Balthasar, a Swiss theologian and priest, says it best when he says, “What you are is God's gift to you, what you become is your gift to God.” Ever since the early prophets, being the messengers of the Lord, God has made concepts for Catholic living according to God's word they made became inbred in our daily lives. With these concepts, we learn how to live our lives as better Catholics as we strive to show God what type of people we are based on our actions. These ideas challenge use to better our lives and to better society. There are two main concepts that students study in the course, In Search of the Good: they are human dignity and the just person. Our senses of dignity are affirmed when our uniqueness are valued by those around us as we all become global citizens. Also, the idea of the just person means seeking and applying justice in a truthful way. Therefore, both of the ideas being human dignity and the just person, connects to the novel The Fault in Our Stars, by John Green, due to their theme of identity and the common good.

To start off, the Catholic concept of human dignity is present in the novel, The Fault in Our Stars, through its use of identity. In the Catholic perspective, “the elect live ‘in Christ,’ but they retain, or rather find, their true identity, their own name” (CCC 1025). In the novel, while Augustus is speaking to Hazel, he says, “Don’t tell me you’re one of those people who becomes their disease” (Green 32). This proves that Augustus has already found his true identity as he looks down upon people “who become their disease”, he does not let cancer define who he is. In conclusion, due to the theme of identity and the common good, the novel The Fault in Our Stars connects to the Catholic concepts of human dignity and the just person. First, the character Augustus Waters exhibits the theme of identity since he already found his own name by not identifying as his disease and understands that the character of a person determines their identity. Moreover, the character Doctor Maria strongly contributes to the theme of the common good by respecting the fundamental and inalienable rights of Hazel Grace, and helps Hazel reach her fulfillment, which is meeting her hero, more easily. As we fully learn to understand each Catholic concept, we grow as Catholic and become better people in spreading God’s word of love.
