Fast Food
Fast food is the term given to food that is prepared and served very quickly which was first popularized in the 1950s. At least one quarter of American adults eat fast food everyday. And one out of every eight adults has worked at some time during his or her lives. This year Americans will spend about one hundred and ten billion dollars on fast food.
The first fast food restaurant was McDonald’s and started the first drive in in the 1930s. They then wanted to make food faster and cheaper by starting the factory system. The McDonalds restaurant trained employees to do one thing only. This way the factory could pay employees low wages and use uniformity to replace them easier. McDonalds is also the largest purchaser in the United States by, chicken, beef, pork, potatoes, and apples.
The way McDonalds food is raised in mass production. All animal sources of food is fed corn with antibiotics. The animals are also given steroids in their food to make them double the size they are naturally supposed to be. Birds are now raised and slaughtered in half the time. Birds breast were also redesigned to make more white meat. Chickens are raised in dark buildings with out windows or lighting. With thousands of chickens is each house, many of them die. The goal for this type of farming is to raise a lot of food on a small amount of land.
Some ingredients in fast food are monosodium glutamate and Casein. Monosodium glutamate is a flavoring agent. It is a form of salt that is added to add more flavor to fast food. Although this ingredient is recognized as safe by the Food of Drug Administration there have been several reports of skin rashes, inching, hives, vomiting, nausea and weakness. ...ime in my day to cook a meal. Most of the time I only have a few minutes to pick something up and find myself eating it on the way to the location I need to go to. I think my problem with fast food has developed into a bigger problem after I started college. Without having a kitchen, I can not make any home cooked meals. Either eating at a buffet, or a market place the food served is deep fried and unhealthy. Most places have healthy choices, such as salad, I always choose the unhealthy option. Why do I do this? Honestly, its all about how it tastes as I am eating it. I don’t think about how it will effect my body or mental state.
Fast food is a common meal for the average American family. Over nineteen percent of family dinners are eaten in a car (Pollan, 649). So why do American’s sabotage their health by the decisions they make? Cost, time, taste and convince.
