While Americans frequently eat at fast food restaurants, most people do not know the harm it could be causing to their bodies. Obesity causes many illnesses, many of which are fatal, such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. According to Jeffrey Friedman, “The United States is rapidly becoming the most obese nation in the world with nearly 300,000 deaths each year” (Friedman 594). Eating fried foods from fast food restaurants contributes to obesity. One of the negatives would be the oil used in preparing those fried foods. The different types of oil that are used to fry the food are vegetable, canola, peanut, and olive oil. All of these types of oil have 120 calories and 14g of fat. What about items like chicken nuggets and fingers that are battered and fried in the oil, which highly increases their fat content? Obesity among Americans has been a growing issue in the United States predominantly over the past decade. Many may argue American’s are obese because of poor food choices, over-eating, genetic disposition, lack of exercise, or the environment which one lives, while others blame it all on fast-food chains and restaurants. These ingredients have rarely any nutritional value to the human body. Throughout the United States, concern of rising health issues is a popular topic. Over a progression of many years, American fast food chains and junk food companies have risen as a common means for food replacing homemade family meals. This quick and easy habit of buying cheaply made and sold foods that lack real nutritional value has been reason for increasing health issues. This habit is seen in children just the same as adults. Children eat the quickest meal with the most sugar and fat (among other unhealthy ingredients). This habit needs to be broken to take better care of the children today. Children are eating snack cakes and other junk foods at school instead of the breakfast/lunch that is offered causing bad habits and a poor diet. The children of America are suffering from the effects of malnutrition and yet, society does not help them to better understand or give higher grade options for them to choose from. Mark Bittman in his article, “Is junk food really cheaper,” argues that Americans are wasting their money on junk food or fast food restaurants when that money could be used towards a healthy home cooked meal. He persuades the readers to have alternatives. Fast food is literally contributing to obesity by providing unhealthy food restricted to people at risk for obesity and even with those with obesity. In the article Fast Food, David Hogan found out the most fast food restaurants’ menus offer burgers, fries, soda, and desserts. Those types of food are unhealthy where burgers contain the high amounts of fat, fries contain a lot of salt, while sodas and desserts contain excess amounts of sugar.
