The All-American meal takes more out of Americans to make then at first glance. Eric Schlosser’s book Fast Food Nation delves deep into the intricate workings of the fast food industry to expose mistreatment and cruelty towards workers in the business, just as Upton Sinclair had done in the early 1900’s regarding the meat packing industry. Schlosser is able to bring light to the darkness behind the All-American meal through extensive research and personal confrontations of which he has high regards for.
Fast Food Nation is a good literary nonfiction book as a result of Schlosser using relevant anecdotes that allow the reader to connect with the working conditions associated with fast food, and by providing a new perspective on the topic of fast food. Schlosser develops an argument using the above criteria to argue that the fast food industry disregards workers and consumers health in order to acquire a larger profit margin and an enlarged consumer demographic.
Eric Schlosser is a renowned investigative journalist who delves deep into “subjects ignored by the mainstream media and give[s] a voice to people at the margins of society” (Eric Schlosser). Before being an investigative journalist, Schlosser was a playwright and has had a couple of his works performed in London. (Eric Schlosser) Schlosser has won a few Awards including the National Magazine Award and the Sidney Hillman Foundation Award for Reporting (Fast Food Nation) however he is not a naturally self-promoting author and has no desire for fame like many others do.
