Fast foods By: Joe Puls Fast food is a big problem in the united states, and It causes many people to become obese. But there are some fast food places that offer and sell some healthy stuff such as apples, and salad. We face many problems, not only with fast food but with the food we make at home can also makes with making people obese. The worst thing of it all is that we are letting the younger generation be changed by fast foods. Children may be getting the worst end of the deal because they are growing up eating fast food 2-3 times a week. Most of the fast food advertisements are meant to go towards younger kids, which is not helping. It is a big problem that children are eating fast food as much as they are. It is not good for their bodies. Fast food is increasing fast with the amount of people that eat it. It is becoming more A frequently cited reason for rising rates of obesity in the United States is the tremendous increase in portion sizes over the past few decades." Paraphrase: The amout of food that Americans eat is unreal, but now the portion sizes are going up, so more people might become obese. However, the pace of improvement is slow and unlikely to reduce young peoples overconsumption of high calorie, nutritionally poor fast food." We must do something about fast food products, to stop from affecting children and leading them to obesity. Is what reflect David Barboza’s article “If You Pitch It, They Will Eat.” School’s, Parent’s, Policy Makers, etc… Should take the lead in this action, by reducing many unhealthy food products from school’s, store’s, and place’s close to home. There should be limit’s that stop’s food companies from promoting themselves as appealing when in reality their food products are a hazard to our bodies. As Barboza states in his article “There is a need to set specific standards on what is marketed to children…” we are in agreement that, what ever kids see on T.V. or being marketed, they want it!
“For someone not to know that a big mac is unhealthy is ignorance, and ignorance is not the responsibility of the fast food industry,” (Daniel Speiser). The amount of fast food joints has largely increased which has become a problem for many people throughout the United States. Several people place the blame for the rising obesity among children on the rising fast food industries due to its convenience, price, advertising, and somewhat un-nutritional content. Some people even take it as far as court to place blame on the fast food industries and for those industries to make changes to their restaurants. The high percentage of obese children in the United States is not caused by the fast food industry. The obesity epidemic has other outside influences, the fast food industries have changed dramatically, and people should take responsibility for their own consumptions. It is time for people to stop placing the blame on others and take responsibility for themselves and their actions.
This dramatic quote from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare states the appalling: we are getting fatter and fatter every day. One of the main reasons for this is the giant increase in portion sizes, or “portion distortion”.
There is no doubt that obesity has taken its seat as one of the top disease that strikes the world today. In America, obesity has now spread through the country leaving 2 out of 3 adults either overweight or obese, and worldwide 1.5 billion are overweight or obese (Overweight). The cause of this disease stems from multiple reasons such as the increase in modern food production, putting out ample amounts of food causing the prices for meat, groceries, and especially junk food to plummet. Subsequently, Americans especially were more inclined to purchase more food and showed an increase in the average American house hold food intake by 1,000 more calories a day (Dreifus).
However, when creating fast food restaurants, the industries were not thinking about the negative effects such as obesity. Other than obesity, other harmful effects exist as well. Fast food restaurants serve unhealthy products such as greasy foods and artificial meat that lead to dietary health issues in many adults and children. A recent study showed that “Young children who are fed processed, nutrient-poor foods are likely to become unhealthy teenagers, and eventually unhealthy adults. Now twenty-three percent of teens in the U.S. are pre-diabetic or diabetic, 22% have high or borderline high LDL cholesterol levels, and 14% have hypertension or prehypertension”
Focusing on the well being of the customers should be the main focus of any major company, especially fast food companies. By reducing the amount of unhealthy choices for children and replacing them with nutritional foods, the nation’s youth will benefit.
Fast food has changed the face of the world. Major chains like McDonalds span all over the world. Fast food chains are continuing to grow despite numerous facts of their unhealthiness. Fast food has been proven to be a dangerous food source, yet people continue to purchase it. The more people buy fast food the more it allows the big corporations to grow. People continue to eat fast food because there are no other convenient options.
Over the last three decades, fast food has infiltrated every nook and cranny of American society and has become nothing less than a revolutionary force in American life. Fast food has gained a great popularity among different age groups in different parts of the globe, becoming a favorite delicacy of both adults and children.
Nowadays in United State, obesity is really a big problem. According to a report from Forbes in 2007, 74.1 percent of people who are over 15 years old in America are considered overweight, which ranked number nine in the world (Streib). According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 34 percent of Americans are obese (Salahi and Meaney). Among all the reasons why people get fat, eating unhealthy food constitutes a high proportion. Junk food, such as candies and fries, provides more fats, sugar, salt, and calories, which could easily lead to obesity. Why people eat fast food instead of healthy food? One main reason is that healthy food is 1.5 dollar expensive than fast food (Dwyer). As I am a government officer, I suggest government to increase the tax rate of unhealthy food and decrease the tax rate of healthy food to improve our eating standard and reduce obesity.
A new time period requires new methods to keep up with the demand. The way food is produced today has basically been reinvented and is made more for convenience than ever before. People have learned to keep up with the hustle and bustle by purchasing the easy, convenient, and inexpensive fast food that is readily available (Schlosser). Every day about one quarter of the U.S. population eats some type of fast food (Schlosser). The food that available through a speedy drive-thru is indeed filling, however it is high in calories and the human immune system is just not built to accept such vast amounts (Schlosser). The normal meal prepared at home may contain 400 to 600 calories, but fast food is at least 200 additional calories that the body does not even use (Top 10 Things). People sometimes ignore those extra calories because of the affordable prices, but what is the consumer actually paying for? The sacrifice of healthy calories for affordable prices is a huge deal and it is occurring more. There is a huge difference between good calories and bad calories. Good calories are used for energy and muscle development, while bad calories will stick around in unwanted place...
Over the last few decades, obesity has been one of the major issues around the world that keeps on increasing. It has become one of the largest factors that people have to deal with, despite if they may not want to. We live in a world made up of fast food industries that basically run this world. Although fast food companies may not know, they are the primary cause of obesity.
In conclusion, fast food should not be held responsible for the obesity epidemic. Between the numerous other options that are just as unhealthy, the improvements the fast food industry is making, and our body’s adaptations that are backfiring; fast food may be part of the problem, but not the actual cause. And yet the fast food industry gets the blame. And attempts to change this image, like the McLean Deluxe, end in failure; forcing them to rely on subtle changes to their menu items. In the end, however, I doubt fast food could be forced to close by the wholesome food movement, there are too many who rely on fast food for a quick meal.
America 's obesity epidemic continues to increase annually. People with different social statuses will be affected more so than others. While the American people continue to buy unhealthy foods, the food industry are profiting in the millions from the ignorance and consumerism of the public. Fast food, when consumed frequently, can cause poor health, poor nutrition and weight gain. As a result of these eating habits an individual could obtain a diverse amount of chronic health problems. However, these problems can easily be avoided by simply eating healthier foods. Unfortunately, the general public is not aware that by simply eating healthier and exercising more can lower the risk of getting these diseases. It is vital to educate the masses on the effects of fast food on their bodies. The United States needs to make changes for its citizens before the parents will be the first generation to bury their young.
In concluding this paper, there are many horrifying facts about fast food. I bet no one expected all of the damage these foods could actually cause. The sad thing is most people don’t know these facts, and don’t care to know they’d rather live in denial and enjoy their “delicious food” than help their bodies and feed them the proper, necessary foods.
Fast food companies have caused a massive negative impact to society over the last couple of years despite the companies promise to produce healthy and nutritious meals. Many people have already been affected by the damages caused by eating junk food in the United States Of America in 1950s the obesity rate was under 10 percent and as the fast food chain increased in 1975 the obesity rate was a whopping 32 percent and it only keeps growing. As the obesity rate increased so was the other forms of diseases that have and will continue to affect people until they know that the junk food is the reason and stop or minimise the junk food intake.150 billion and still increasing is being spent on obesity related diseases and 174 billion is being spend for treatment for diabetes and as more people consume junk food the higher the rate for treatment. In order to reduce medical expenses and self harm from junk food one must switch to a healthy and proactive lifestyle and if the adults don 't stop this bad habit children will follow and be effected in the near future.
