directly relates to the topic of food and health. The quality of the food consumers eat is not the same as the food eaten years ago. Years ago food was not loaded with chemicals and steroids like it is today. Today, there is a rush to get the chicken as big as possible in the shortest amount of time. There is a rush to get the cow or pig as big as possible, but using the cheapest methods possible. There is a desire to get the most crops harvested and into the stores in the shortest amount of time. The quality of our food is going down while the price is going up. The increase in price is forcing more families to eat fast food. On average you can get a hamburger for roughly $0.99 but lettuce is $1.29. The price of a 2 liter soda is cheaper than juice. When most families are already stretched financially, it is cost effective for them to choose a hamburger and soda over a salad and juice. This is even true at fast food restaurants where the average cost of a salad is over $5.00. Even though the choice is cost-effective, it is costing the family more in the deterioration of their health and the medication needed to treat their health conditions. Fast food is a contributing factor for obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. These are also the leading causes of death in the United States, but they are not just impacting older Americans. School-age children are being impacted by these diseases at alarming
In “Don’t Blame the Eater,” David Zinzcenko illustrates a very valid argument. His conflict seems to be with the food industry and its horrible variety of products. The results have been staggering to the public’s health, especially teenagers. Fast food restaurants are Zinzcenko’s primary target for causing this epidemic. Zinzcenko stated, “lunch and dinner, for me, was a daily choice between McDonald’s, Taco Bell, Kentucky Fried Chicken or Pizza Hut. Then as now, these were the only available options for an American kid to get an affordable meal” (pg.241). This statement is very true and has been for a while. Fast food is very convenient, especially for teenagers. People are reaching obesity at a very early age and remain that way throughout their lives.
The obesity crisis is turning out to be a huge issue today in America. According to CDC, more than one third of the adults from the US are obese. Those related conditions consist of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and many others. Also from CDC, the estimated medical cost of obesity in the US annually was $147 billion in 2008. Nowadays, obesity is spreading to the children because of the fast food industry targeting the younger audience to their food. Fast food was created very cheap and turned out to be one of the main causes of obesity. People are now consuming way too many calories and the calories that they are consuming from fast food is all fat calories. All of the ingredients have no nutritional quantity for the body. Fast food contains very much high fating components which is endangering consumers health. Salt, fat and sugar is turning out to be available everywhere. Fast food often turns ...
Obesity in America is directly due to the fast food industry. From the rising mortality’s among people who are obese from fast food. To even the preservatives fast food chains use within their food. Not only have that calorie’s people intake from these restaurants even been miss looked. While people may think they can overcome the urge, fast food chains exclusively use addictive’s in their products to hook people from day one of use. Healthy lifestyles among society have been misled by the very fast food chains, which state their “healthy”. With that said, emotional issues even come to play when involving a human’s appetite to fast food. Even beverages sold at these fast food chains exceed the normal limit of sugar a healthy being should consume. Even America’s view point on serving sizes of meals served at these fast food chains goes way beyond a healthy lifestyle that everyone wants.

Millions of American people buy fast food every day without thinking about where, how and why. The ramifications of fast food is impacting the American people both around the waist line and the community where they live at. “As the old saying goes: you are what you eat.” (Schlosser) The customer have made the choices to eat fast food or not. The industry doesn’t care about the customers; studies have shown that the fast food industry is the reason for the rise of American obesity. “Live fast and die young” (Moore); this could not be more true when looking at the impact of the fast food industry.
One out of every three Americans is obese and the majority of these obese people in the United States have eaten regularly at fast food restaurants. As the obesity rate increases, the number of fast food restaurants goes up as well. Although it is not certain, many believe that obesity in the United States is correlated to eating fast food. Since the United States has the highest obesity rate out of any country, it is important for Americans to monitor the fast food industry that may be causing obesity. With the pressure to get things done in a timely manner, fast food became a big necessity. However, when creating fast food restaurants, the industries were not thinking about the negative effects such as obesity. Other than obesity, other harmful effects exist as well. Fast food restaurants serve unhealthy products such as greasy foods and artificial meat that lead to dietary health issues in many adults and children. A recent study showed that “Young children who are fed processed, nutrient-poor foods are likely to become unhealthy teenagers, and eventually unhealthy adults. Now twenty-three percent of teens in the U.S. are pre-diabetic or diabetic, 22% have high or borderline high LDL cholesterol levels, and 14% have hypertension or prehypertension” (May, Kuklina, Yoon). The food that they provide is made to be eaten quickly, causing problems for the digestive system. Also, the health problems lead to the use for health insurance, which adds to the costs of Medicare. Health care costs will only worsen an already failing economy. Therefore, the government should regulate fast food restaurants in the United States in order to repair the deteriorating health and economy in America.
McDonalds chicken nuggets were my favorite meal as a kid. Theres nothing like getting a free toy and some greasy food. However, I 've gotten older and my palette has changed. As a kid I struggled with obesity and fast food was a major contributor. I now live in an area where fast food is really not an option. On the other hand, some Americans only option is fast food.
Throughout the world fast food has made a tremendous impact on the marketing world and the people that are consuming the food. The truth is, fast food restaurants are addictive and the food is delicious and as a result, people wind up going to those places almost every day. Standing in line at a fast food restaurant, Jim could already taste that quarter pounder he was about to order. As he gazed around, he noticed many already chowing down on what looked like their seventh or eighth burger. He observes that one woman had to pull up a chair because she could not sit down in the booth comfortably. Jim began to wonder to himself just how many quarter pounders had that woman ate in the last few years, to have lost all control of herself. Weather someone is buying fast food once a month, or two times a week, it still has the same negative effect.
Junk food is a favorite in this society. Fast food restaurants make it easier to grab food on the go. The greasier or sweeter food is the better. But junk food and sugary has caused many health problems. If there was a junk food tax, the government was target foods that contain partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, foods that the main source is salt, energy drinks, caffeinated beverages and foods, and soft drinks with high sugar content.(Todorova, Elena 1.1-1.4) I believe adding taxes to junk food could help the decrease many health problem, but I will do more research before I make a decision.
