Families are the most important aspect of life, without a family to call your own is a shame. A family gives everyone their own specific click and people who will always care about them. According to McCornack (2013) a family is defined as a network of people who share their lives over long periods of time and are bound by marriage, blood, or commitment; who consider themselves as a family; and who share a significant history and anticipated future of functioning in a family relationship. From this definition of family, the person that fits the build of family the most to me is a brother. I personally have a brother and it is one of the greatest blessings on Earth. So I am asking you, do you have a brother? Because if you do not have a brother, …show more content…
These terms, among others, will be used to develop upon and clarify certain instances in my relationship with my brother. Those explanations and examples will make up the analysis of why my relationship with my brother is so important to me. Concepts In this paper, several terms and ideas will be used to clarify and analyze the relationship between my brother and I. An important factor in understanding a brother’s relationship is to understand the concept of conflict. Conflict, as defined by McCornack (2013) is the process that occurs when people perceive that they have incompatible goals or that someone is interfering with their ability to achieve their objectives. My brother and I are pros at conflict due to growing up and often being inseparable, an extensive understanding of how each other functions as a person and what types of things annoy or angry each other. Conflict between us is a social norm, and when we are not fighting, something has to be wrong with one of us. Due to constant conflict between us, it is important to understand how we settle our disputes. McCornack (2013) discovered that there are multiple ways to resolve a conflict. The different ways Gabe (my …show more content…

Everyone had influenced by their surrounding. Your personal identities and choices in life are based on the role of the relationship you have with others. Regarding the assigned topic in the COUN. 757-course assignment one, a significant adult in my personal life that played a significant role in my development during the school-age developmental stage of my life were my parents, Eve and James Miller. There is little difference in these two individuals when compared to how they are now, however, the lifestyle these individuals have now is significantly different than the lifestyle they had. My relationship with Eve was a nurturing relationship. She organized and aided in her children’s daily life activities in and outside of the home environment. Eve is the spouse of James, who, at the time, served in the military and went to work every day at 6 am. and arrived home at 5 pm. My relationship with James was more distant, however, this was not intentional. He was essentially the person who handled the financial stability for the family.
The novel “Little Brother” starts of with four teenagers getting mixed up in an explosion while playing a role playing game, they then get arrested by the Department of Homeland Security and are later then questioned and even abused. In the end, they are released, but one of them, Darryl, was not and the DHS refused to tell the group where he was. After this event, one of the four teenagers, Marcus, started to revolt against the DHS through technological attacks and he creates a network of teenagers, called the Xnet, using the X-box consul to communicate. In the later part of the novel, he tells a trusted reporter about the ordeal that he and his friends went through. When the report was published he was yet again imprisoned by the DHS. During a waterboarding interrogation, the local troopers raided the compound where the DHS were staying and in the end they were able to free Darryl and many others who were being interrogated by the DHS. The novel was heavily influenced by Orwellian ideas, specifically George Orwell’s “Nineteen Eighty Four”; it tackles issues about social movements. Which is well connected with Manuel Castells’ Network Society, in which he discusses as to how the characteristics of a network society; he informs us that power lies in those who are part of this network society and are able to influence other social actors. Because the spread of information is so horizontal in this society ideas spread fast and makes it the perfect platform for social movements, like Marcus’ Xnet, to arise.
Relationships, to me, are very important to have in your life. Some people may think of one of the most common relationships, which would be romantic. However, when I think of relationships, I personally think of the people around you. Anyone in your life has a relationship with you. These relationships aren’t always good, but they aren’t always bad either. In my life, the relationships I have are shared with family, friends, teachers, etc. However, I am surrounded everyday with “adult” relationships, team relationships, and more.
Relationships play an important role in one's life. They are formed on the basis of love and understanding. Relationship helps various people in every aspect of life and assists them in being a better person. Such a relationship was found in the novel
The chapter talks about the different types of relationships you can have and how to keep them healthy. The relationships that the chapter covers are friendship relationships, love relationships, family relationships, workplace relationships, and the dark side of interpersonal relationships. Friendship relationships are relationships with another person that is “interpersonal” (DeVito), “mutually productive and characterized by mutual positive regard” (DeVito). Love relationships are a next level of friendship relationships. Love is known as the most important types of relationship, because it is a natural human desire to be loved. There are six types of love relationships; eros, ludus, storge, pragma, mania, and agape. Family relationships are the relationships between you and the people you are related to by blood and marriage. Family relationships are known as primary relationships, primary relationships are the relationships that are most prominent in your life. Workplace relationships are the relationships that you have in your workplace, with your co-workers and bosses through networking and mentoring. The dark side to interpersonal relationships is that there are negative aspects to having relationships. These aspects are jealousy, bullying and violence among other things. All of these relationships are affected by culture, gender, and
Before I started this paper, I knew that our relationship wasn’t perfect, but now that I have put experiences to the terms and realized that we need to work on quite a few things. The biggest thing I learned is that conflict doesn’t have to end in fights, and there can be positives that result from conflict. Now that I am aware of these problems, I am going to bring them up to my brother and try and explain to him that if we don’t change some of these problems we might risk losing the most important interpersonal relationship we have in our lives. Compromise is key to any lasting relationship and that is not something we are good at and definitely something we can and will improve upon. I am not saying that conflict is going to be eliminated completely, but what I am saying is some conflict can be gone without and is unnecessary. The next biggest thing I learned was about communication and how special my relationship with Gabe really is. I realized that nonverbal communication in a very developed relationship is more important than verbal communication. But nowadays, with me being in college and him two hours away, I am relying on verbal communications more than ever. Fowler (2009) showed me that our relationship will continue to change, but it does not
Interpersonal conflict is very common with many relationships. It occurs when two people can not meet in the middle or agree on a discussion. Cooperation is key to maintaining a healthy debate. More frequently; when dealing with members of your own family, issues arise that include conflict and resolution. During this process our true conflict management style appears “out of thin air”. (Steve A. Beebe, 2008, p. 191).
I live at home with both of my parents, my second oldest brother, and occasionally my oldest brother and niece visit as well. I grew up with the concept from both of my parents that family is important, no matter what family always comes first. My father showed me this concept in many situations like working all across the country and having to stay away from home to provide. Or even before he had a family and immigrated to the United States so his future family could have a better life. Because of the concept that family comes from, my family is very important to me.
Out of the numerous commodities and resources that are scarce on the planet in which we inhabit a family, or even a family system, can never be parallel to even an iota of them. This is due to the fact that everyone, no matter what age at what time period of their life, has a family. That family may not be the cookie cutter family that society imposes on the media world. People develop without knowing their family, people create new families of their own, or they can even find something or someone to call family because of this family will never be scarce. Family is an objective concept to every single person and the definition varies significantly from being as simple as the smallest of toys to as complex as a group of people interconnected
Everyone seems to define family differently, however, the significance of family is the same. For you, family means everything. You can always count on your parents and siblings for help and love. Family is very valuable and important to you and should never be taken for granted. No one can deny that family is the foundation of our generation. A family is where we all start our life journey and helps us grow to be successful throughout our lives.
Family is arguably the most important social institution in an individual's life. A family is defined as a group of individuals that are related through blood ties, adoption or marriage, that form an economic unit, where the adult members are responsible
To me, family is a group of people that are brought together by blood, adoption, or marriage. I also believe that people do not have to be blood-related to be considered a family. If two or more people have a connection with one another where they can rely and depend on each other and have an emotional attachment, I also believe that to be considered family. Golics, Azam, Finlay, & Salek (2010), define family as a diverse group of people that care for each other on a day-to-day basis (p. 400). My mother and father are still married after 27 years. I am a child of three with two older brothers, both are currently married with children. My older brother Robert and his wife, Lauren have to two girls named Abigail and Avery. My other other brother...
It’s been said, “you can choose your friends but you can’t choose your family” this quote is so true when it comes to family relationships you can’t choose them but you’re stuck with them for life. Things can often get tough and when family relationships get tense it can only make life a lot more difficult than what is necessary. My communication goal is to better improve my current relationship with my teenage brother, we have both have not been getting along lately as well as I would like (teenagers and their mood swings…) and I want to change that in a more effective way by using the skills I learned in interpersonal speech. In this paper I tried to complete my goal of improving and maintaing a solid relationship with my brother I applied perception checking, listening, and self-disclosure to better communicate and understand my brother. I used the concepts of self-disclosure, perception checking and responsive listening because those three concepts applied the closest to each situation. With each one I felt that I understood how exactly to communicate using them and that they fit in well with what was going on between my brother and I.
There are so many different types of family relationships. Whatever form a family takes; it is an important part of everyone’s life. My family has played an important role in my life. Good family relationships serve as a foundation to interactions with others. Supportive families will help children to thrive. The quality of the family relationship is more important than the size of the family. Making the relationships priority, communication, and providing support for one another is key to developing relationships. Family relationships are what make up our world today; they shape the ways that we see things and the ways that we do things.
