Family is something that most people have. Even people with no biological family have someone or multiple people that are close enough and care enough to be considered family. My parents divorced when I was one year-old, right after my little brother was born. I don’t remember a time when they were married to each other. Both my parents had been married once before, and my mom had a child from a previous marriage. Three years after the divorce, both of my parents remarried. My mom had another daughter with her husband, and my dad had another son with his wife. My mom has been married for fifteen years now, and my dad has been married half as many times; he is currently on his seventh marriage. She was caring, attentive, loving, and always supportive. He was always busy, selfish, and cared more about his job and spending time with his friends than his own children. It took me a very long time to realize that my dad couldn’t give us the attention we needed as children because he was still trying to save himself. He thought if he could meet the right people and make the right connections he could jumpstart his business and spend more time with his kids. All the while, he was using our weekend visits as an excuse to leave me in charge of my brothers and go out with his friends again. He was spending time away from us in order to spend more time with us. My brothers and I were forced to love him from a distance at a time when he was right in front of us. Because of this, my idea of family was based on who you were related to and had nothing to do with love or care or nurture.
