Together, We Have It All According to Dictionary.com, family is a basic social unit consisting of parents and children living together in a household, or all the descendants of a common ancestor. My family is much more than just the people I live with. I live with my boyfriend and son, and they are my immediate family. I don’t limit my family to just my boyfriend and son. I have my mom, brother, grandma, grandpa, and etc. that I may not live with, but I see them regularly and we are all very close. Also, family isn’t just blood related. I have a few friends and co-workers that I consider my family, and I would do anything for them. My family (friends and blood relatives) is one of a kind. My brother and I grew up with just our mother as the sole provider. Our dad wasn’t around very much due to reasons I never I understood. Growing up with two parents is better for children, but only when both mother and father are the biological or “intact” parents (Berlin, 2004). Berlin (2004) stated that it’s ultimately best for children to grow up with both of their parents to prevent unwanted circumstances, such as teen pregnancy and dropping out of school. My brother and I were very successful in school; we played sports and were very engaged in life. We both went on to college after high school and moved out on our own. I have my own family now, and I work and go to school full time. My brother lives on his own while going to school and working full time, also. We have beaten the odds. We continually thank our mother and family for always being there. Our mom is loving, supportive, and always there when we’re in need. It hurt not having a father around, but our mom and crazy family made us feel like there was nothing missing. We had what we needed and wanted; we never went without anything.
