Throughout the United States there are many different franchises that stimulate the economy of the city that they are located in. Threw ticket sales and merchandise sales franchises can boost the economic income of the city. Although this can been seen as a one sided argument, Cities without some of this huge revenue would not be able to stay afloat. Primary examples would be the rise, the fall, and the resurrection of the city of Cleveland with Lebron James. This instance exemplifies how a city building a strong economy falls after one player leaves the location and now returns to bring the city from the ashes. Another prime example would be the break out point guard of the New York Knicks in the 2011-2012 season Jeremy Lin brought huge merchandise and ticket sales to the New York Knicks franchise. Other examples are Cinderella stories of college basketball teams in the NCAA Division 1 Men’s College Basketball championship, The Detroit Lions, Tigers, Red Wings, and the Pistons and their quest to bring back the city of Detroit, and finally the Kansas City Royals and there run for the World Series this season. All of these stories can give a perspective of how the economies of these franchisees and cities can have built from all different scenarios.
On June 26th, 2003 The Cleveland Cavaliers selected a home grown prodigy from Akron, Ohio Lebron James. According to Washington Post, “While Lebron James was a Cavalier the economic impact on the city of Cleveland was estimated to be between $50 million and $80 million a year, according to NBA-affiliated TV station WKYC.” (Ferdman) Lebron stayed with the Cleveland Cavaliers from the 2003 to 2010 season.
