The fairytale The Beauty and the Beast is illustrated as a love story, however when looking deeper into Belle’s nature it seems to be that she is affected by several disorders throughout the film. In Beauty and the Beast, we see Disney once again sugarcoat personal problems in order to present a young audience with a one dimensional and simple female hero. Belle has clearly shown symptoms of Schizoid Personality Disorder, Stockholm Syndrome and Schizophrenia which can be treated by a biological therapeutic approach or a psychoactive drug approach and therapy. Transformation is present in both Mad Shadows and Beauty and the Beast. Transformation and change go hand in hand in order for suffering to be understood. Suffering is understood throughout Beauty and the Beast when an evil fairy transforms the handsome prince into a hideous beast, in order to teach him a valuable lesson. The prince, “. . . remained in [the form of a beast]. . .” (41), which reflected his ugly behaviour, to teach him that there is more to life than just appearance. Therefore, he was ultimately punished for his temper and shallow behaviour. It was only when Beauty acknowledged that, “it is neither good looks nor great wit that makes a woman happy with her husband, but character, virtue, and kindness. . . .” (40). Beauty realized the importance of virtue and the transformative power of love, which freed the prince from his curse, and in the end he acknowledged the value of essence over appearance. Nicholas A. Smith’s “Idealism and Insanity: The Subversion of the Southern Belle through Blanche Dubois” describe Southern Belles as charming, educated, and independent (Smith 1). These characteristics describe the main character, Flossie, in Patricia McKissack’s “Flossie and the Fox.” Southern Belles are taught at a young age that knowledge instead of beauty provides prosperity, an idea that surfaces in McKissack’s short story (Smith 1). They have a different portrayal in films, such as Victor Fleming’s Gone with the Wind; beauty is the path into prosperity (Gone with the Wind). Flossie symbolizes a Southern Belle, whose knowledge soon becomes tainted when she employs charm as a means of manipulation to trick the fox. Flossie use of manipulation transforms her into the villain of the story.
While contrasting with her sisters, Belle is the light, and her sisters are the darkness. Apparently, Belle's patience and unsophisticated personalities make her become the light, and on the other hand, her sisters' jealousy and vanity are the darkness. Villeneuve uses personification in her writing to show that Beauty made her own conscious decision to stay and love the Beast, it was not because she was suffering from an illness where she falls in love with her captor. The first way that Villeneuve uses personification is when she brings monkeys into the fairy tale. She writes these monkeys to be servants to Beauty, waiting for her orders (Villeneuve 70). One movie that stands out in particular to me is the Disney movie, The Beauty and the Beast. I watched this movie as a child and loved it. However, looking at it today it sends me a different message. In the story the main character Belle is taken prisoner by the Beast, who is very aggressive, temperamental, and controlling. Belle ends up falling love with the Beast, but I did some research on this and there are many theories that say Belle shows similar symptoms to Stockholm Syndrome. This is where a victim starts to have feelings and affection for their captor. My problem with The Beauty and the Beast, is it targets young girls and teaches them that it’s okay to stay with someone and put up with their temper and aggression as long as you love them. This again is promoting a culture where domestic violence and abuse are okay. Another popular movie today that serves as a good example would be The Twilight Saga. In the movies the main character Bella falls in love with a vampire and because of this many awful life threatening things happen to her. Bella is so obsessed over Edward, the vampire, that when he leaves her, she shuts down into a spiral of depression. This also targets young girls and makes them think they have to have a man in their life. This is a huge problem because women in abusive relationships often find it very hard to leave their partner. To conclude during research what was found interesting was the fact that this disease mainly infected girls. Not many diseases are based on gender, especially when other types of autism are supposedly boy dominated. Another interesting fact was the different forms of the disease, meaning from mild to severe, most diseases have a basic modem, all symptoms are the same for every person. And one last thing was the countless amount of studies done, that showed a lot experiments were done to learn more about the disease/syndrome.
Standing out and being different can be very difficult because of the people and the world around us. Belle--from Beauty and the Beast--does not follow the ordinary lifestyle of the villagers. She wants more than just the same old boring routine in the village that her whole life has been about. Joan Crawford, was one of the most popular and well known actresses in Hollywood in the 1930s and 1940s. Personality disorders are patterns of inflexible traits that disrupt social life or work and may distress the affected individual (Rathus, 2016). The movie Mommie Dearest, captures moments in Crawford’s life that show her struggles with her personality disorders. Throughout the movie, you watch her personalities become more prominent and abusive. Her main disorders include borderline and paranoid personality disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, as well as histrionic and narcissistic personality disorder.

People that grow up watching the classic Disney Princess movies, which give us false hope that every simple quiet girl will end up marrying a prince. The Beauty and the Beast being one of those movies, teaching us that if you fall in love with a hairy like creature he will turn into Mr. McDreamy. The bubbly Disney version of the Beauty and the Beast usually does not allow scholars to find a deeper meaning. Believe it or not, Disney did not create this classic tale. In fact, Charles Perrault wrote a darker version of it almost three centuries before. Perrault’s twisted feminist version has hidden messages and meanings still puzzling scholars today. Some say that at the end of every fairy tale he would put a rhyme that would be a hidden message to little girls. The messages presented caution about not trusting strangers or to stay true to who you are. Unlike Disney’s anti- feminist version, often characterizing girls as the damsel’s in distress, Perrault’s gives girls the look of independence. He shows young girls that they do not always need a prince charming by giving Beauty the decision that could change her life.
All young girls in America can remember watching the movie Beauty and the Beast by Walt Disney. At that time, it was a story of love and triumph, a girl falls in love and gets her prince charming. As we grow older, we question that movie and its intentions that we were too young to understand. Who is the real beauty and who is the real beast? A puzzling question due to our society constantly telling us how we need to look and be perceived as in order to not be “the beast” and more of “the beauty”.
