A number of factors cause air pollution levels to skyrocket in India. Thousands of auto rickshaws and taxis transport Indians around the country daily. Many rickshaw and taxi drivers blend lower-priced fuels with gasoline, in a process known as fuel adulteration, to maximize profit (Press Trust of India). Although the drivers are saving money, fuel adulteration comes at a high cost for the environment. The process causes toxins such as particulate matter and carbon monoxide to enter the atmosphere at an increased rate (Press Trust of India). Another massive contributor to India’s air pollution is the burning of fuelwood and biomass in over 160 million Indian homes (Singh, ii). The two are often used as a source of energy for cooking and for heating purposes. Fuelwood and biomass cakes used in stoves produces smoke that emits concentrations of pollutants at a rate 5 times higher than coal. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 488,000 Indians die from these harmful …show more content…
Thus, India joined with the United States in 2009 to form the Partnership to Advance Clean Energy (PACE), which supports researching and implementing clean technology throughout India that emits low concentrations of carbon (U.S.-India Energy). PACE-D has tackled the area of energy efficiency through smart grid pilot programs, creating buildings with zero net energy usage, and heating waste for energy (Energy Efficiency). They began a pilot program consisting of fourteen smart grids placed in India (Energy Efficiency). The project will hopefully expand, with smart grid technology being used eventually throughout all of India. PACE-D also supports and promotes “near zero energy buildings (NZEB)” and low-energy heating and air conditioning. The goal is to accelerate the implementation of these buildings and activities throughout areas of India with climate
Many people are unknowingly exposed to air pollution and have no idea. Some common causes of air pollution are automobiles, factories, landfills and toxic materials. Air pollution destroys the environment; it causes climate change because it greatly affects the greenhouse effect and it causes acid rain. Acid rain contaminates water and destroys animal’s homes. Air pollution has many effects on people it causes coughing, elevates your risk of asthma, wheezing, it can cause diseases and birth defects. It’s estimated “that seven million people died prematurely in 2012 from exposure to air pollution and that air pollution can cause cardiovascular diseases. The use of incinerators has caused protest movements from the Chinese citizens because they are becoming aware of the air pollution that is being given off from the burning of their trash and the effects it has on their health. There have been many reports of premature births and stillbirths of pregnant women that live near garbage incinerators”( Professional Safety, 2014, p.
Fossil fuels, such as coal and oil, are Carbon rich compounds, the combustion of which produces Carbon Dioxide, a pollutant and a greenhouse gas. A large amount of energy is released during this process, which is why the pollutants off products are tolerated. This process occurs constantly throughout the world, in power stations, vehicles and cooking ovens, leading to an immense volume of CO2 being released every second, 50% of which is absorbed by oceans (Oce...
Not all the villagers have access to biogas stoves. For those villagers that use biogas there is no smoke when cooking, but they do not have access to biogas all year round.
One of the most dangerous environment issues Southern California is facing today is air pollution. This includes the burning of fossil fuels and natural disasters. Los Angeles is one of the most polluted cities in the world, and the most polluted city in the United States. I will research information about the causes, the effects, and the history of air pollution in the Los Angeles. For my research, I have relied mostly on, the school’s database and library, as well as current events.
The 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China brought to issue the effects of air pollution on human health. A) How might a person with increased cardiovascular risk be affected by exercising in a polluted environment. B) Can anti-oxidant supplement help at risk and athletes alike to perform in polluted environment?
Environmental Health & Engineering, Inc. EMISSIONS OF HAZERDOUS AIR POLLUTANTS FROM COAL- FIRED POWER PLANTS. Environmental Report. Needham, 2011. Print. 18 November 2014.
Many hazardous pollutants escape from the internal combustion of the engine. Conventional gas powered vehicles use irreplaceable fossil fuels to run. When burned, these fossil fuels create numerous toxins like carbon dioxide (Larminie 246). Carbon dioxide is considered the main greenhouse gas that creates the foundation for global warming (hybridcars.com, pollutants). This harmful pollutant may not have a serious effect on people at first, but it does have consequential effects on the environment that in turn put people in danger (Nutramed.com). The major consequence caused by global warming is the rise in average temperature. This results in a domino...
Air pollution is caused by many things such as car fumes, burning of fossil fuels,
There is no question that pollution from automobiles is a major problem in industrialized countries and is increasing in developing nations. And the number of cars is increasingly rapidly: in the United States, the automobile population has increased 6X faster than the human population and 2X faster than the number of new drivers (Motavelli, 2000). At the same time, the average fuel economy of the 2001 fleet decreased to 20.4 miles per gallon, the same it was in 1980. This decrease is fueled by the growing trend in inefficient SUVs. As over 50% of the USA’s oil comes from overseas, the dangerous level of waste promoted by inefficient vehicles makes this more than simply an environmental issue.
Air pollution has become very costly environmental problem in terms of both human lives and in terms of billions of dollars lost for health-care expenditure and crop damage.
Burning wood to cook food in India exposes the occupants to dangerous levels of air pollution. According to the Government of India, in 2011 an estimate of hundred and forty-two million rural homes depend on traditional biomass fuel for cooking. This makes India the largest consumer of firewood and biomass. Greenhouse gases emitted by such fuel along with other sources of pollutants add up to gigantic proportions making India the 3rd largest carbon emitter in the world, after the United States and China. According to the World Health Organization, 4.3 million debt cycle globally from indoor air pollution each year; China accounts for nearly 1.5 million debt and India close to 1.3 million debts every year due to smoke from cooking, heating, and lighting
Car pollutants cause immediate and long-term effects on the environment. Car exhausts emit a wide range of gases and solid matter, causing global warming, acid rain, and harming the environment and human health. Engine noise and fuel spills also cause pollution. Cars, trucks and other forms of transportation are the single largest contributor to air pollution in the United States, but car owners can reduce their vehicle's effects on the environment. Car pollution is one of the major causes of global warming. Cars and trucks emit carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, which contribute one-fifth of the United States' total global warming pollution. Greenhouse gases trap heat in the atmosphere, which causes worldwide temperatures to rise.
The environmental issue that I’ve chosen is air pollution. Air Pollution is a huge environmental issue not only in the United States but all over the world. I picked this issue because of the affect that it has on our entire world. This is a highly important issue that people should be aware of because of the huge effect it has on practically everyone. In my essay I will address what air pollution is and how it starts, I will talk about which cities have high pollution verses cities with low pollution, what’s being done to change, and the affect it has on humans, animals, and our earth.
Every other day a new industries are being set up, new vehicles on roads and trees are being cut to make way for new homes. All of them, indirect way lead to increase in CO2 leads to melting of polar ice caps which increase the sea level and pose danger for the people living near coastal areas. Pollution can have an impact in our health not only affects people with impaired respiratory system such as asthmatics, but very healthy adults and children too. Exposure to pollution for 6 to 7 hours, even at relatively low concentrations, reduces lung function and induces respiratory inflammation and, healthy people during periods of moderate
Factories and transportation depend on huge amounts of fuel--billions of tons of coal and oil are consumed around the world every year. When these fuels burn they introduce smoke and other, less visible, by-products into the atmosphere.
