Facebook is an online social networking service. Its website was created by Mark Zuckerberg, who was studying psychology, with his Harvard College roommates and fellow students, on February 4, 2004. Facebook was created as a way to communicate with their fellow students, but later expanded it to other colleges. It gradually added support for students at various other universities and later to high-school students. In 2006, Facebook was opened up to anyone with a registered e-mail (Phillips, 2007).
It’s hard to believe that Facebook has been up and running for over eleven years now. I never knew that it even existed until one of my friends moved to Germany requested my friendship through email. I have never been one that keeps up with what other people on the internet are doing. I like to keep up with my friends on a face to face basis. As I check more into Facebook, I discovered this was the perfect way to keep in touch with my friends and family member. Since I live in a different state than most of my family, this was the perfect way to stay in touch with them. If I get friend requests from people I don’t know I ignore their request, I have a hard time trusting people anyways.

Technology, especially social media, can be a positive tool if used appropriately. Facebook has become so important in our lives that we don’t have to be with someone face to face to have conversations or to keep in touch. We need to stop and think about our actions and how we treat others. When walking into a store, restaurant or watching people on the streets, they have their eyes on their phone. When I meet my friend Karen at a restaurant, she will sometimes pull her phone out and get on Facebook or Pinterest. People don’t realize that when they are on their phones and ignoring the group they’re with, that this is rude and hurtful. When I’m with my friends and family I put my phone away so that I’m not being rude or distracted.
