There is a definite direct effect Facebook has had on the advertising industry. People can even walk to restaurants and pubs now while seeing Facebook advertisements. “Follow us on Facebook” are often the worlds you could see advertised. As technology progress, humans evolve to the advanced technology and enhance our lives via technology. We connect to our families, friends and others through social media such as Facebook. Social media takes up a huge part in our lives. Social media infest us with information that are relevant and irrelevant to us. Marry Marrow wrote, “It was Facebook that changed the face of e-communication; in fact, it was the first electronic social media” (para 1). She assumes that Facebook is playing a huge role in electronic communication. In the journalist Maria Konnikova, “How Facebook makes us unhappy?”, Konnikova divulges many aspects of people on social media through researching and experience, and finds how social makes us unhappy. I agree with Konnikova findings after reading her article. Who would have thought that in a few years facebook will become the main social meeting place for millions of people around the world? Facebook, is a social phenomenon with a dimensionless scale effects both positive and negative. Facebook has also generated interest among scholars and researchers who study its effects on the different layers of our life. As many studies suggested and my own life experience, Facebook can have some negative impact on romantic relationships, self-esteem, identity theft and other dangers to safety that result from an invasion of privacy. There are ways to minimize these negative outcomes, which we should be aware of.

According to a Dian de Vries and Rinaldo Kühne (2015), Facebook is by far the most popular social networking site worldwide with over one and a half billion active users every month. Sites like Facebook are most popular among emerging adults, making them the most vulnerable group to the negative effects social media can have on well being for a number of reasons. Individuals in this age range are starting to form and solidify self-perceptions which are directly linked to one’s well-being. Negative self-perceptions are associated with symptoms of depression and positive self-perceptions are associated with a healthier, more positive well-being. (de Vries & Kühne,

Just about everyone uses social media. Particularly to keep in touch with family and friends, or to post on discussion boards. Tragedies occur daily from the use of social media. The fact some people use it to bully others online which is cyber-bullying. Not a lot of persons are aware of the dangers that can occur from the use of social media. Andrew Keen, the author of “Douse the Online Flames”. Expressed his views on the negative aspects of social media and why people should be careful. He discussed the popular notorious case about cyber-bullying. This case led many schools to discuss the severity of cyber-bullying. Megan Meier, a 13-year-old girl from a suburb of St. Louis, committed suicide in 2006. Meir had an internet friendship with a boy named “Josh. He turned out to be her 47-year-old neighbor Lori Drew. “Facebook undermines well-being rather than enhancing it”, Ethan Kross writes in “Facebook Use Predicts Declines in Subjective Well-Being in Young Adults”, a scholarly study of the negative psychological effects of Facebook. He recruited 82 Facebook users in the study to observe their Facebook activity, the state of mind, and direct social contacts. They reported that the more people use Facebook, the more their life satisfaction levels decline; the more the participants socialized in the real world, the more positive they are (721). “Why socializing on Facebook has a different effect from socializing in person?”, the author asks in the “Facebook Is Bad For You: Get A Life!” from The Economist.
If a user often views things related to cooking for example, then Facebook will start making ads pop up for cookies, grocery stores, and other food related items. Even the advertising industry is breaching on user’s privacy. When someone goes shopping at the store, there is not someone stalking them writing down everything they look at on a pad of paper, and then suggesting related stores to him or her. That would be very suspicious. Now, with Facebook, the company sneakily violates user’s privacy while making them think it is smart technology and is beneficial. Psychologically, advertisers are becoming smarter into tricking their customers. Ad suggestions are more or less an invasion of privacy by the company
Loved ones, best friends, coworkers, classmates, and siblings shape our personal network. Within that network, not all the relationships are equally important, and therefore, I believe that Facebook can be a positive tool if used in a responsible and smart manner, but only if a balance can be found. Social media was created to help people maintain connections despite the distance, with the idea of being a supplement more than a substitute for human interaction. However, what it is actually doing is isolating us in our own worlds, making us lonelier and, ultimately, less
The survey will be anonymous. The first part of the survey will ask questions to help me determine the different patterns of Facebook usage through frequency of status updates, purpose of status updates, frequency of chat usage to connect with others, activity in Facebook groups or pages, and frequency of usage to view the news feed. For the status updates section, students will provide their frequency in posting status updates—within a week—and their purpose of their posts or the content of their posts. Next, students will provide how often they use the chat feature of Facebook to connect with others, and how many people do they connect with within a day. Then, students will provide information on what their other activity on Facebook consists of, from just scrolling through the newsfeed to active involvement in groups or pages. I hope to find different patterns in UCSB students’ Facebook usage. For example, a pattern could be those who frequently post status updates, but don’t connect with others through Facebook. The second part will consist of Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale, which is a commonly used test to determine self-esteem. Its answers are on a four-point scale, from strongly disagree to strongly agree. Each answer on each item will be scored appropriately to result in a score from 0 to 30 to determine self-esteem. Scores below 15 will suggest low self-esteem, 15 to 25 will show normal
Few researches found that there is no relationship between Facebook and college students’ academic performance. For instance, Sana Rouis examines that Facebook has no significant effect on students’ achievement (296). In her research, she surveyed a large group of 203 undergraduate students and employed two different types of data analysis (298). Focusing on the same type of participants, Syarif Husin Lubis et al. also found that there is no difference between Facebook users and non users in terms of their academic performance (590). Although Lubis et al. surveyed a smaller number of participants, their research is more thorough than Rouis’ because it employs more control variables (591). Furthermore, unlike Rouis, Lubis et al. are more detailed in their research by examini...
