Facebook is everywhere, it penetrates into our daily life. An individual needs it for personal purpose like networking and sometimes Facebook is even utilized it in classroom; Social movement needs Facebook to spread its ideology; Our modern society needs it to united people together. Even though Facebook sure did bring some benefit to us, the disadvantage of it is overwhelming and should not be overlooked. I claimed that Facebook is harmful. It’s not only terrible to individual because it damages the quality of our daily offline conversation, but it has been used by authoritarian regimes as a tool to control people. It’s often used on children getting attached by another child on the Internet. Nowadays, it’s not only limited to the usage of teenager bullying another but sometimes government bullying a citizen. According to Katy Pearce who is a media scholar studies specifically about Azerbaijan, the government of Azerbaijan uses Facebook to create false content about activists in order to personally attack them. Government employ people who are expert in using Facebook posting information insulting activist who didn’t joined the army because of physically reason, calling them traitor of the country. Some may argues that we lives in the new networked society, thus with the helped of Facebook technology, activists can spread the ideology of their cause, reach out to more people who have similar interest. Facebook also helped activist gather information more easily. Even though information travel quickly through the use of Facebook, it changes the traditional methods of movement. Utilizing social media like Facebook is categorized as connective action which is loosely organized online when compared to tradition way of movement. Connective actions "have been criticized as 'mere clicktivism ' that is unlikely to have the same impact as old-fashioned movements and parties. " (Bennett) The idea of clicktivism implies that people seeing movement online, in this case Facebook, and then "like" and share to our own social network, feeling like we have done some good when in reality we have not done anything substantial to make a change.
