The American dream in the 1920s is different from the general American dream. Thus, in my opinion, Gatsby represents the American dream in the 1920s particularly, but he does not represent the American dream in general. First of all, the concept of American dream is changing based on the features of different time periods, so only after figure out the definition of “American Dream” can we make a correct conclusion. The American Dream is believed to have started around the time America was settled, and it is rooted in the Declaration of Independence through the expression of a sense of hope. On the one hand, as described in the book, Gatsby owned “a factual imitation of some Hotel de Ville in Normandy, with a tower on one side, spanking new under a thin beard of raw ivy, and a marble swimming pool, and more than forty acres of lawn and garden” (page 5); he hold amazing parties (page 39-40); he had servants and gardeners to serve for him (page39) and friends to spend happy time together. Gatsby is successful financially and socially, and he created an entirely new persona for himself from his underprivileged past. If we only focus on this aspect, Gatsby is a good example to illustrate the concept of American dream—an individual can achieve self-made success. On the other hand, even he is extremely successful, he can never win the same repetitions as Tom, who represents the person with better background. Not only others but also himself care his embarrassing background, which obeys the concept in American dream—“all man are created equal.” No matter how succeed he is or how hard he has tried, his family history is a crucial flaw forever. For example, in Chapter Five, Gatsby says to Nick, “My house looks well doesn’t it?
