In life most people experience trials and conflicts. Fortunately many of us are able to find jobs, ask for assistance from friends family or even programs to aide us through those times. However what if those options were not available to you? What quality of life would you and/or your children experience? All over the World people live this reality everyday, They are forced to not only live in poverty, but some in what is known as extreme poverty. Extreme poverty is defined by The World Bank as life on less than $1.25/day. What this means is that children living in this condition are deprived of their basic needs such as no housing, persistent malnutrition, death, no health care and schooling is hard to obtain. On a Average in 2011 the wealth of White households were calculated at ($110,500) which was 14 times more than a Hispanic household earning ( $7,683), which was about 17 times more than Black households which were ($6,314). Inequality is a definite factor in extreme poverty. The conflict theory is clearly represented in extreme poverty. When applying this theory you look at the top one percent and their constant insured position at the top. The people that are more qualified to do the jobs they do and to keep earning the money and opportunities. However, people in extreme poverty should not be afforded this opportunity because they are less qualified. They are not qualified to to the same jobs. People that live in poverty are not afforded the same opportunities or resources to adequately sustain them in day to day life. Surviving in a world where money matters is not easy at all. Try living on less than a dollar and fifty cents a day. Go into a store and look for food enough for three meals that has enough nutrients for a balance diet all under a budget of $1.50. Fresh fruit and vegetables along with meat are out of the question, then what are the options? There really are none except a few canned and dried goods. There are people who live on this on a daily basis. The amount of people who live in poverty are over 1.4 billion and increasing daily. Society has not focused enough on social justice for those in poverty. “The working poor harvest sweet potatoes in time for Thanksgiving. They cut trees in time for Christmas. The fruit of their labor are in our lives every day, yet we rarely see them. Even when we encounter them face-to-face stocking shelves in Wal-Mart or checking us out at the supermarket, we do not see them as whole people, and we surely do not see them as poor. They are hidden in plain sight” (Edwards). People work minimum wage and receive barely enough assistance from the government to help support them. These people work and continue to work to make enough to survive one day at a time. The opportunities for those of low class compared to those in middle or higher levels of class do not match. These classes all receive different benefits, but more importantly those in poverty impact society as a whole.
The same common question comes to us all at one point,”Why are people poor?” Whether you are liberal, conservative, or have had previous experiences that pull us to believe more strongly in certain things, all of our ideas on poverty fall on the same path. Unfortunately, as reality points out, is that inside the walls of the White House, where it is commonly believed that actual progress is happening, ideas on poverty revolve around stock exchange, whose ideas only benefit those who get elected. Subsequently, these elected officials lead a group or campaign in a worthless round of unethical ideas that instead of helping poverty, increases U.S. debt. It is also commonly misinterpreted that the articles on poverty from the many journalists, newscasters, and other liberalists are quite true when discussing the causes of poverty. But many of these journalists tend to talk about the ‘symptoms’ of poverty rather than it’s root causes. So, how can we solve this issue on political pandering, public misinterpretation, and most of all, the ironic amount of poverty in such an industrial america?
Many reforms in the UnitedStates have been passed to help fight against the “War on Poverty”; but it has not been effective in eradicating poverty in the U.S. There are about 46 million people who are living in impoverished conditions and poverty continues to be a social issue in this country (Heritage Foundation, 2011) In the beginning, our country was formed under the belief that “this land is the land of opportunity and if we worked hard enough the American Dream can be gained” (Schwarz, 1997). People immigrate to this country today in hopes of becoming rich so they could gain a better life. In spite of coming to this country for a better life, many are faced with the lack of skills and money to succeed. In the end, most will end up in unskilled labor jobs that can barely support their families. Poverty continues to be a growing social issue because people have the “ inability to provide necessities like clothes, healthcare, and shelter” (Heritage Foundation, 2011) to help themselves and their family; therefore, many sacrifices have to be made to insure their survival. Yet many reforms made to help people living in poverty are based “off of outdated statistics” (Henslin, 2014, p.276) and are not enough to help the lower class maintain a sufficient standard of living. Poverty relates to conflict theory since the poor are struggling just to get by. Government programs such as Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), housing assistance, and food stamps provided by the government are not enough to help the poor gain social mobility.
Today’s world is faced with numerous social problems that pose enormous threats to humanity. Many of these problems threaten our very survival. Poverty is an issue that plagues all societies in every part of the world. Not even the most privileged countries can seemingly avoid it. It has a huge presence in the United States which is one of the wealthiest nations in the world.
This comparison shows how poverty levels, in recent years, are plateauing with around 15% of the population living below the poverty line. The perpetuation of this issue suggests that poverty, unlike a recession or a brief economic downturn, is a persistent issue that continually affects our global society. But what does poverty or impoverishment mean? The definition of poverty is more than a simple state of hardship but rather a time economic turmoil. The specific poverty threshold varies from state to state but on average is $12,082 for one person and $24,257 for a family of four (2012 US Census Bureau). For the individual living alone, the poverty line would mean living on about $30 a day; for the family of four, the poverty line would mean about $16 a day per person. And with this daily dollar amount, people must pay for housing, gas, electricity, heating, food, child care, education fees and more. By looking how much needs to be paid and how little they actually have, it becomes clear how their lives are a struggle for basic survival. Poverty tends to affect certain demographics of people more than others. Amongst ethnic groups, poverty rates are highest amongst Black Americans at 24% with Hispanic Americans following at 21%
Whether if it’s millions of homeless people, or countless underpaid hard workers, poverty is a major issue in the United States. We cannot propose to solve any issues, without the discussion on poverty and how important it is to find solutions to this dilemma. Poverty is the source for many problems the U.S. face, and ignoring it, is only making it worse. My proposal to solving this growing problem is to increase minimum wage, improve government funding and work support programs, and lower the cost of tuition to colleges and universities.
How can there be so much misery and insecurity in the midst of such abundance? One of the first things we see is that poverty doesn’t exist all by itself. It is simply one end of an overall distribution of income and wealth in society as a whole. Poverty is both a structural aspect of the system and consequence of how the system is organized and how people participate in it.
I would agree with all these reasons and I would like to add that there could not be any short-term solution to address the issue of global inequality and poverty. It is important that government, organizations and society should focus on long-term
Poverty and income inequality are issues affecting a majority of people around the different parts of the globe. These issues exist and are increasingly becoming a major concern in both developing and developed countries. The purpose of this paper is to show some of the causes and effects of income inequality and poverty in developing and developed countries. Income inequality varies especially by region, education and social standing and hence increasingly widening for so many years. In addition, a large group of people in the world have the inability to access high quality education, shelter, food, clothing and basic medicine. When one hears poverty they think of having no money or a house and being on the streets like a homeless person. That is in fact true but, poverty is more than that it is more widespread across income levels. Not just those at the absolute bottom of income earned and wages. 12% of Americans are unable to meet their basic needs 20% being 18 years or younger (mit.edu). Poverty does not just affect people on the individual level it also can have effects on communities as a whole.
Many people live on few dollars a day. It has been said that approximately 80% of the world population live on less than ten dollars a day. Whether you are in the wealthiest countries or the poorest countries, poverty will still exist as there are high levels of inequality between people. Poor people have less access to health and education unlike the rich. Even if they are sick with dangerous diseases, they cannot get treated due to lack of money. They do not have power in the public which makes it even harder for them to escape from poverty. Many people think that the high level of inequality between the rich and poor can lead to crime and violence.

On today’s life, social inequality is given based on a variety of different characteristics, of race, ethnicity, gender, culture, economic class, immigration status, and sexual preference that a person may have. It is the power of privilege the holds the honor and respect, and the prestige of income and property, that wins every time. Auto-differentially positioning the poor as minority groups to hold less power, and manipulated by those who want to maintain themselves as elite. “Often experiencing unequal treatment compared to the dominant group, giving them a collective sense of being discriminated against” (Carl 2013, Pg.41) It is clear that society still struggles to find opportunities to live in equality with the poor. Rewarding them with only unequal distribution of opportunities that only increases, today’s wage gap and the disadvantages that they must overcome on their way to survive and succeed in life. What factors can increase this inequality? The poor must overcome the lack of economic resources, the stereotypes created among their group, and the government cutbacks that they must live on their daily basis till the rest of their lives.
People, especially those from wealthy nations, do not truly understand how large of a problem poverty is and how many areas it effects. Not only does it cause economical issues, but it can contribute to social and security issues as well.
