In the United States, asking people to have a healthy diet can be a challenge for most. It is hard to have a healthy diet when there are fast food restaurants on every street that people walk by. Not only that, but if a person walks into any grocery store more than 50% of the products in the store will be junk food. These two factors make it a challenge to maintain a healthy diet. In the article “The Extraordinary Science of Addictive Junk Food,” Michael Moss exposes the various ways junk food corporations make products tasty and appealing to consumers. It is hard to ask people to have a healthy diet when they grew up consuming sweet and salty snacks and food in general. In his article, Michael Moss mentions how “as people aged, their consumption of cookies, candies, chips and other junk food goes up,” (485). People that start consuming junk food at a young age get addicted to it and as they grow old they consume a larger quantity. This is the problem that gets in the way of having a healthy diet. How can people stop consuming junk food if they have been doing so their whole life. People will have to go through a long process of “rehabilitation” to stop consuming junk food. Americans start eating junk food at a very early age which eventually becomes an addiction and they end up having an unhealthy diet throughout their lives. But the problem that exist with most american 's diet is not their fault. The food industry are the ones that should be blame for this problem. They were never honest with their consumers and they were unfair. The information that they provide about the food is hard to understand which does not help the customer when they are choosing between a health food and junk food. In addition, they are misleading with the false advertisement about the food that they sell. They make the food appealing and affordable in order for people to consume what they are advertising. If I was in a position of authority, I would start off asking preschools and elementary schools to stop giving kids frozen food and start preparing fresh meals every day. This will help kids start to build a healthy diet at an early age. I think this will also decrease the amount of diabetes and obesity in America. Everyday Americans die from the diseases they carry from obesity. Many Americans over eat because their social problems or because they are hereditary. Many plans have been discussed but finding the solution is the problem. Junk foods and unhealthy beverages have corrupted children’s minds all over the nation and putting a stop on it could lead to other benefits. Obesity is very common in America, around 66% of American adults are overweight and nearly 33% are obese, which leads to heart disease, cancer, stroke and many other illness. Each article presents a different view on where the blame lies in this public health crisis and what we should do to amend the issue. If one tries to manipulate kids, or even adults, into not eating junk food, when the opportunity does arise they will most likely chose the unhealthy version. It should be up to the parents on what their kids eat, and they should most definitely make them eat healthy, and foster healthy eating habits. Whenever those kids do grow up, it should then be their responsibility to eat healthy, and hopefully they will continue on eating healthy. That does not mean that they will though, but in the end they should learn their own way, and on their own time. Throughout the past years and more here recently obesity has become a fast growing problem in the United States and around the world. Since this has become such a problem certain authors are starting to take a stand in how they think the solution should be fixed. The solutions are discussed in the following articles: How Junk Food Can End Obesity by David H. Freedman and What You Eat Is Your Business by Radley Balko. Both articles have clear and distinct arguments, but the argument by Balko entices his readers and has a clear purpose and tone that allowed his article to be more effective.
Mark Bittman’s article “Is Junk Food Really Cheaper?” tells about how people are not really getting their money’s worth when it comes to consuming junk food. He does this by showing the differences between ordering a meal at McDonald’s and cooking a meal at home. The twenty-eight dollars that is spent to feed a family of four at McDonald’s can be put to use making a meal that could last for a couple of days and feed more than four (Bittman 660). Engineered to be addictive, hyper-processed food has a taste that makes people wanting more. Lastly, Bittman addresses the convenience of junk food provides nowadays. Therfore, the cost of junk food is not really cheaper in comparison to a home cooked meal.
In Michael Moss’ “The Extraordinary Science of Addictive Junk Food” he argues that companies have a huge influence on what consumers purchase and have been successfully able to get people addicted to junk foods because one’s willpower does not overpower their lack of adequate information and time, vulnerability to manipulative marketing and formulation of products, and their socioeconomic status.
