Since before I was attending college, I had spent many months deciding which major I should go for. As my ambition was to get a professional career in the medical field, I chose two professions in the healthcare sector. The first one was a pharmacy major, and the other one was physiotherapy major. After studying the advantages and disadvantages of both majors, I decided to choose pharmacy major based on my academic interest in biology, chemistry and botany, and my personal interest to work directly with patients, and to be a part of major innovations in drug therapy. Moreover, the wide spectrum of job opportunities available is the special fascinating characteristic of the pharmacy profession. Now, I am already in my first year of college. I am taking the prerequisite courses to attend Doctor of Pharmacy program. In my opinion, continuous watching of the up-to-date news and information about the pharmacy profession is crucial. Recently, some authors and pharmacists-bloggers write statements and articles regarding the provisions of the lack of job opportunities for pharmacists in the future. Personally, by reading these articles, for a person who is trying to become a pharmacy student, I am wondering what pharmacy career prospects will be once I graduate. The information from those statements and articles are really worrisome and overwhelming. As a pharmacy techician, I worked to support pharmacists in greeting patients with prescription orders, processing insurance paperwork, and answering questions and requests. I learned to be patient and resourceful, but constrained in my ability to give medical advice as often times patients ask for advice. Also, this job allowed me the opportunity to learn from pharmacists as they prepare prescriptions, provide advices to doctors and help patients with the most cost effective medications. To many people all a pharmacist does is count pills or dispense medication. But the profession of pharmacy has moved tremendously beyond just dispensing medications to providing more patient oriented services. Pharmacists think it is time for a change and are coming together to fight for what many believe should already be considered a responsibility of a pharmacist. As healthcare professionals many pharmacists are not recognized as health care providers and consequently are limited in scope of practice, as well as compensation.1 However, this is not a universal or federal responsibility.1
When you ask people what you think when word “pharmacist” come to your mind? They often say pharmacist have to deal with variety of legal drugs. From my personal opinion, when I hear the word “Pharmacist”, I think of helping others. This inspiration came from my Health Science class I took in twelve grade. Until senior year of my high school, I did not know what I wanted to be. But it all changed, after my first shadowing experience at pharmacist station. There I learn about what exactly the pharmacist career is about, what are some of the equipments used in the field and how I can contribute the knowledge I receive here to help others.
Annotated Bibliography In the current pharmaceutical industry, drug prices are too high and have been a big problem. The drug Price Competition and Patent Term Restoration Act（Hatch-Waxman Act) make generic drug use easier to pass. Pharmaceutical companies have become dependent on overpricing their drugs in the United States. As we all know, healthcare has always been a big issue in the United States because of the medical expenses and medicines that make people unbearable with their soaring prices.
Over the past few weeks I have been researching my interests, values, and goals. Throughout this research a lot of things that were already evident to me, were proven for a fact. My interests included researching different aspects of science and data analysis. Analysis has always been a big part of my life because I analyze everything. My values have been proven to be centered toward helping people and being around people. These interests and values are almost equivalent with what my goals in life have been over the past years. For the past few years I have wanted to become some type of pharmacist or physician. In this paper, I have researched what being a pharmacist and physician involves.
Since my early schooling days, science and mathematics have always fascinated me given that all components of the world are explained on the basis of these disciplines. In this regard, Pharmacy which is based on Chemistry and Mathematics has interested me a great deal as it has direct impacts on our daily lives. The more I have become familiar with the chemistry and mathematics knowledge involved in pharmacy, the more I have appreciated its significance in improving the lives of people in the community. Out of the many careers that one would opt to pursue, Pharmacy has stood out as the career that will enable me serve the society more directly and have a real impact in the quality of peoples’ lives by touching their health. In addition, I love a career that is challenging and one that I will be involved in even in old age. In this case, Pharmacy offers me this opportunity. My interest in Pharmacy has also developed from my personal health experiences and becoming aware of its expansiveness. Every time I have had to take medicine to cure an illness, I have become more interested to know how drugs are made and how the drug components work in the human body to alleviate pain and restore health. I desire to pursue a career in Pharmacy so as to gain practical experience in these aspects of research.
The importance of the becoming a pharmacist should not be about what the career can give a person in monetary value or the amount of accolades one receives. Instead, the career should be about saving and improving human lives and serving the public. Pharmacists keep people healthy, make them feel better, and try to help the public live longer and happier lives as long as possible. From small infant children to the elderly, everyone needs pharmaceutical care. Sometimes it can be a matter of life and death if medication is not available to the public. Pharmacy as a career would be a wise decision if a person could withstand the amount of education the profession entails.
I pleased to apply to the PharmD program as the program is one area that corresponds to my career dreams. Being part of this program gives one the opportunity to gain an excellent experience in working and collaborating with various health care providers in the ward. But more importantly, it facilitates a practical environment in dealing more closely with patients. Hence, it helps to provide the ultimate health care services to patients. Also, it permits me to carry on gaining different knowledge, skills, and values in addition to those I have already developed during my undergraduate studies. According to James Owen, BS Pharm, PharmD, director of professional practice for the American Pharmacist Association (APhA), the typical tasks performed pharmacist may change in the future. As our times are becoming more technological and efficient, so will our medicine system. Owen believes "pharmacist will have more time to fulfill more of a clinical role." In the future, dispensing kiosks will be able to process prescription refills during off-hours. Since pharmacist will not be required to do so, they will have more time to assist in the clinical side of pharmacy; that is advising doctors to prescribe certain medications, offering advice to patients in need, and presenting knowledge of a healthy lifestyle to patients.
