Alopecia Areata (al-oh-PEE-shee- ah ar-ee –ey-tuh) is commonly known as hair loss. There are many different forms of hair loss. If one were to study the art of cosmetology the student would learn from their Milady’s textbook that alopecia areata is a sudden loss of hair in round or irregular patches; the scalp is not inflamed. Even after many years of research the pattern of hair loss does not have a definite known cause. At this time this form of alopecia is seen in those that have a lot of stress in their lives or has an autoimmune disease.
Word History
The description of alopecia has been around since 30 AD when Cornelius Census used the Greek word “Alopekia” meaning fox mange. It wasn’t until the 18th century that the actual term alopecia areata was used by Sauvages. (keratin.com)

Alopecia areata should not be confused with androgenetic alopecia. Androgenetic alopecia is the common hereditary hair loss also known as male pattern baldness. Androgenetic alopecia is the most common form of hair loss. (Milady’s 65) With androgenetic alopecia the hair on the head does not grow back like the alopecia areata. The follicles that hold the hairs into the scalp become smaller in diameter making the actual hair shaft thinner and eventually fall out. In a normal hair cycle the hair grows, rests, sheds and then regrows. Each cycle tends to last about 3 to 7 years. With a healthy head of hair ones growth cycle should be closer to 7 years, while the head with alopecia is closer to 3 years. I am writing this letter of recommendation for Brandy Maiden’s proposal to add a Cosmetology course at UACCM. The cosmetology course is the professional practice of beautifying the hair, skin and nails. The career options are virtually limited, such as cosmetic chemist, aesthetics, make up artist, etc. The school can consider both needs of its production and input costs for overall structured curriculum further to review this proposal.
Alopecia areata, also known as spot baldness, is presumed to be an immunologically mediated disorder characterized by non-scarring patchy loss of hair. It is a relatively common disease and most often it appears in childhood or early adult life but can occur at any age. In two-thirds of cases, partial or complete regrowth of hair occurs within 5 years. Alopecia areata is most common in people younger than 20, but children and adults of any age may be affected. Women and men are affected equally. Various types of alopecia area are classified depending on the area where hair loss occurs.

The most common type of hair loss is androgenetic alopecia. Androgenetic alopecia is male or female pattern baldness and will affect 40% of men by the age of 35, and by the age of 50 about 50% of men will have significantly thinning hair. In women pattern hair loss is most likely to occur after menopause. It is called pattern hair loss because in men the hair is lost in a well-defined pattern, beginning above both temples. Over time, the hairline recedes to form a characteristic “M” shape. Hair also thins at the crown, often progressing to partial or complete baldness. The pattern of hair loss in women is...
In the recent past year or two, a woman’s natural hair has become a big thing. Before, African American women, to be specific, were so disgusted by their hair. They would do anything in their power to change the “nappy” aspect of their hair to “beautiful”. They would use relaxers very so often and hot combs.
Thick, luscious locks are often associated with youth, health, success, and attractiveness. In fact, our society places great importance on hair and many individuals feel that it plays an important role in their identity. As a result, regardless of one’s age or gender, hair loss can have a significant impact on an individual’s self-esteem. Unfortunately, thinning hair is relatively common amongst both men and women as it is caused by several factors, such as hormonal changes, stress, poor diet, medications, medical conditions, and, most often, genetics. Since in most instances, hair loss is a progressive process, it is important to take action if you are troubled by thinning hair. If you are searching for a hair loss solution, you may come

Educating boys and girls early in adolescents about proper hair care will help them be better aware about the possible risk and health risk associated with chemically altering the hair and wearing weaves and hair styles that cause tension and breakage. Avoiding things like braids, extensions, and ponytails that are pulled too tightly which can cause traction alopecia, and the hairline to recede. Someday I hope to teach Aniyah more hair techniques, and she will one day do hair for a hobby or maybe even become my Cosmetologist.
Hair growth takes place in three phases the anogen phase, the catagen phase, and the telogen phase. The first phase to take place, the anogen stage, can last anywhere from three to seven years. During this stage, hair grows at an average rate of 1 centimeter per month which adds up to around 12 centimeters or 1 inch per year. It is also during this stage that melanin, the pigment that gives hair color, is created. As people get older, follicles gradually give up producing thick, strong hair. As a result, hair becomes thinner and shorter; baldness may even occur. The next phase in hair growth is the catagen phase which takes place anywhere from two to four weeks. During this stage, the base of the follicle moves from underneath the skin to the face and rests near the opening of the sebaceous duct until it is ready to begin growing. This growing takes place during the telogen phase which lasts anywhere from three to four months. During this stage, new hair begins to grow from the hair follicle. As it grows upwards, the old hair will be shed naturally or may be pulled out. This shedding of telogen hairs happens easily and painlessly; these are the hairs that fall out when a person is shampooi...
