When I discovered that exercise courses are a required part of a degree programs I was less than thrilled. I decided to take walking and jogging because I reasoned everyone can walk. I was unaware of how much adding a walking routine to my schedule would change my everyday life. Since starting this course I have noticed some health improvements, found a way to get my family involved, and learned to schedule exercise into my basic routine. One of the benefits I have noticed over time is a gradual amount of weight loss. I started out this course at 182 pounds which of course means I am obese. When I first started the course, I was walking during the daytime and getting my oldest child to watch the youngest three. This meant that every time I would go to leave, my children would inquire where I was going to. I would explain to them that mommy was taking a walking class and that I needed to get some exercise for the class and for my health. As the Texas heat became more pronounced, I started doing my walking at night after my children had long since gone to bed and my husband could listen for them during the hour I would be gone. I would explain to them that I had to do my walking and that it was important for both my schooling and my health so I might not be there if they woke up, but that I would be home very soon. This led to many conversations (the kind you can only have three and four year olds) regarding why people need to exercise, how the body works and why it is important for people of all ages to be in motion. We would follow close to the 1.61 mile route, but will stop about half way as that is where our neighborhood playground is located. We can allow the children to play there for thirty to forty-five minutes and then walk the rest of the route back to the house. As a child I always walked, whether it was to school, church, or just to friends home I continue to enjoy this activity as an adult. People are too overwhelmed to think that it would benefit them. Even taking a jog would require too much of an effort. Because of society’s obligations, the worries of an average everyday routine bring them devastation. It becomes difficult to try to find time within their schedules to squeeze in a time to run. Adding exercise on their to-do list would result in more pressure while trying to reduce stress is the last priority on their mind. However, if they were able to manage their time and duties, making time to get involved in a cardio workout would not be a problem. They would be able to experience the true benefits of exercise and see how it could translate into reducing stress in their lives.
Many studies have come to the conclusion that individuals who participate in health and wellness routines as well as a regular exercise program have a relatively increased degree of energy, lower healthcare bills, much better quality of life along with less stress, as well as improved health. Of course gaining muscle and losing fat are the two most popular reasons that usually attract people to the gym, but they make up a small part of the potential benefits that can be achieved with exercise. There are several ways in which I have benefited in my life from exercising regularly, besides just making me bigger and stronger. It has made me become more organized, helped me make better decisions, and motivated me to take on new challenges in life.
