Existential therapy is considered a way of thinking and can be best described as a philosophical approach which influences a therapists overall practice (Corey, 2013, p. 139). It is the psychoanalysis of what makes us human and explores questions of mortality, responsibility, and isolation and how this relates to the clients current situation. Existential therapy is founded on the basis that we are responsible for our own choices and actions and therefore write our own tale (Corey, 2013, p. 139). Since we, as humans, are in a constant state of transition, it is only natural to ask yourself important questions as to who you are, where am I going, and how will I get there Corey, 2013, p. 146). No one is immune to problems and anxiety. They can show up at any point in a person’s life the loss of a job, the loss of a loved one, or when facing a major life decision. Any of these situations can cause an individual to question their existence (Corey, 2013, p. 154). Existential therapy is a way for clients to recognize when they are not being authentic to themselves and not living up to their potential (Corey, 2012, p. 154).

There are a multitude of theories and therapeutic practices to choose from when deciding on your own personal counseling model to integrate into a practice. Existential, behavioral, and reality therapy are three distinct types of approaches that are geared towards certain types of clients. It is crucial for the therapist to recognize which practices are best suited for their clients in order to give them the best care possible.
