In most companies today, CEO’s give annual pay raises due to an employees work ethic. There are different kinds of employees that work at companies; including experienced workers, young workers, and old workers. However, in the case “Companies Rethink Annual Pay Raises” Rachel Emma Silverman breaks down the company called, “BetterWorks” and other companies and how they prioritize and decipher who gets pay raises. Many scholars according to the case and in other cases believe that an employee should receive a raise because of the value and work that they give to the company. In a natural point of view, you put in the work and do a great job that increases profit for the company and it is only right that an individual would get congratulated or promoted for that. In some companies, employees receive bonuses for mediocre work or just doing the minimum and that is not good enough to have the privilege of getting a raise. Even though, the case says at the heading that “Some experts contend that giving larger and more frequent bonuses might spur better performance” does not necessarily mean that is positive for the company.
What defines a great employee? For one they are usually on time every day to work and come in with a positive and motivating mentality to do better than they did yesterday. Also, they have the mind that they can do what it takes to bring more profit to the company and have steps and ideas to make that happen. Any CEO or a person with high authority would recognize the one that is putting in extra work and time in their craft right? However, if an employee is getting a raise and it is not that high then they are complacent with their salary in some cases. I think by increasing the pay raises to make employees do better on their performance is not needed because it takes away the effort that one should have to best that they can no matter if they are receiving a raise or not. I agree that having annual raises is important and it is very beneficial to the businesses but pay raises should be looked at as a more of a privilege rather than a need. Although, some companies are willing to give pay raises to mediocre workers and is there not a real issue with that but a high pay raise should go to the worker or workers that give a lot of time and effort to build the profit for the company.
