Evolution and Religion

Religion has existed as the answer and life guidance for billions of people from essentially the dawn of intelligent human life as we know it. In the 1830’s, Charles Darwin revolutionized the field of science by researching and publishing his theory of evolution. This caused an immediate and volatile response, especially from people of a religious bent. From then up until now, scientists and creationists have fought bitterly over whether evolution actually occurred or if God created humans, as we know them. Presently, most if not all legitimate scientists believe that the theory of evolution is in every practical sense true. The problem is, many Americans still do not agree with evolution and use religion as their explanation for human life as it currently is today. People from both sides of the argument should recognize that they are both working toward a common goal of explanation and understanding of life. The theory of evolution and the doctrine of religion can and should coexist in harmony together.

America itself is one of the main issues or roadblocks between the resolution of evolution and religion. As a country, the United States is quite the paradox. It is a melting pot of different ethnicities, religions, and beliefs, yet “In a 2001 Gallup poll 45 percent of U.S. adults said they believe evolution has played no role in shaping humans” (Lovgren). In fact, America has the second highest percentage of population who refuse to believe in evolution. This creates a situation in which the United States is shockingly lagging far behind the rest of the world in terms of an outdated or new ideal.
