Perspective at War Everyday Use and Good Country People are short stories with similar themes. Can an attitude from one of the daughters have an effect on both the mother and daughter’s life? The Topic called my attention due to being the eldest daughter in my family. Dee and Momma link to the connection I have with my mother. Dee, the eldest daughter, is seen by momma as insubordinate. The same way I feel my mother sees me. Dee and Hulga change their names in order to prove a point. Joy changed her name as a tool to rebel against her mother, Mrs. Hopewell. Dee changed her name to express to Maggie and her mother a new culture, causing her mother to insinuate that Dee is rejecting her identity and heritage. From my understanding of the reading, Joy is a person of resentment due to the lack of mobility her prosthetic leg offers. The connection between Mrs. Hopewell and Joy brings me to the insinuation that Joy and Mrs. Hopewell contradict reality, both are blind to the world in their own way. “Good country people" unmasked: Hulga 's journey to salvation” helps me to see the irony in the relationship of Joy and Mrs. Hopewell. Mrs. Hopewell goes by the cliche "good country people are the salt of the earth!". A phrase that shows the optimistic view Mrs. Hopewell has towards the world. Hulga, on the other hand, responds to her mother with "Get rid of the salt of the earth," showing Hulga’s nihilist side. Mrs. Hopewell and Hulga have different thoughts, which lead to contradicting one another. Yet towards the end of the story Hulga becomes her mother. The reflection of Libido and the reflection of defense mechanism. In the reflection of Hulgas sex drive; libido, Hulga is completely turned on and her emotion thoroughly defeats her reasoning, leading to Hulga’s salvation. In the reflection of defense mechanism, Hulga never does accept the unfair reality. Hulga gets rid of her depression by projecting her hatred of physical disability onto her surroundings. Hulga believes that the physical disability makes her inferior to others. A belief that makes Hulga insinuate that everyone mocks her behind her back. This leads Hulga to have oversensitivity and distrust in others. The source brings me to an understanding the possibilities that lead Hulga to destine Manley. My perspective projected from thinking Hulga was someone who belittled everyone around her because of her PHD degree.
