Honey Heals
Researchers have studied the use of honey as a wound dressing ever since the first honey-based products for wound care were introduced in 2002. Kegels (2011) evaluated the usefulness of honey-based products for the treatment of lower extremity wounds in a home care nursing setting. In Kegels’ 2011 literature review, he reviewed publications from Sumitra (2009) that proved honey provided the necessary energy for healing at the cellular level. In the 2011 literature review, Kegels also highlighted a study by Molan (2006) who found that honey provided a moist healing environment, debrided wounds faster, stimulated tissue regeneration quicker, had anti-inflammatory capabilities, and enabled dressings to be removed painlessly and with less damage to new tissue. Furthermore, Kegels (2011) mentions a study by Bardy et al. (2008) who found honey to be an alternative for the treatment of wounds, and other skin conditions.
