Evaluations are used as standard procedures for determining teacher effectiveness. They have a long history, dating back to at least the mid-1700s, showing the need and desire for competency in the field of education to produce effective teaching. Two hundred years later, the need for teacher evaluation continues and has moved into the spotlight of education concerns. Even more recently the evaluation of educators has come under intense scrutiny since the advent of the No Child Left Behind Act enacted in 2001 and the Race to the Top formulated in 2009.
However, the use of standardized evaluation systems is problematic for educators in specialized areas such as a library media center. These teachers have dual roles as both a teacher and library administrator. This unique sector of education requires a specialized set of evaluation criteria to fully ascertain their performance. Some evaluation models currently being utilized, such as Danielson, take into account this specialized area and have developed rubrics to assess teacher-librarians.
Journal Article Summary
While looking for an article in my content area for this assignment, I found the article “Performance-Based Evaluation and School Librarians” to be an interesting research based assessment. A survey consisting of three phases was conducted of numerous Pre-K to grade 12 public school librarians about the “implementation of state-mandated performance-based evaluation for Virginia” (Church, 2015, p 2).

...ry school setting, I am fully aware of the issues surrounding proper evaluations of my position. Although the Danielson model has a specific rubric for teacher-librarians, my school district has chosen not to use it. The administrators feel that we are more teacher than librarian and therefore should follow the teacher aspect of the model. This research paper is a springboard for discussion of changing the outlook of how we are evaluated.
Changing the way teacher-librarians will not impact student achievement in any way since we are currently an untested area in the standardized testing world. However I believe seeing the grand picture of what teacher-librarians bring to the table for subject area curriculum and tested areas will enhance the outlook of our curriculum. We will be able to intersperse library science into other curriculum instead of in isolation.
