Euthanasia: The Right to Death Euthanasia is and has been a very controversial topic over the last 50 years throughout the world. Euthanasia is where a doctor or physician gives a person with a terminally ill disease or an incurable condition lethal injections or prescriptions to intentionally end their life under the patient 's request. The word Euthanasia comes from the Greek word meaning "good death.” A good death is classified as one that is free of pain, they die upon their request, and their death supported and dignified. On average, 43.41% of men and 37.81% of women have a chance of getting some form of cancer before they die. The individual with the terminally ill disease should be able to choose his or her fate instead of the doctor choosing it for them. If the patient knows he or she is going to die soon, they should be able to choose when and where they die, not whenever their body shuts down while laying in a hospital bed. Choosing when they leave will save their families from the stress and anxiety due to not knowing when their last day might be. When a patient finds out he or she has a terminal illness, they go through stages of acceptance. The phases of acceptance are; denial about having the illness, feeling guilty as if they had done something wrong, and then depression about having six months or less left to live. Euthanasia will relieve all physical and mental pain from the patient. Many patients say that just having a prescription for Euthanasia at hand provides peace of mind and a feeling of control. “Supporters of euthanasia contend it is a humane way for terminally-ill patients to end their pain and suffering. They contend individuals should be given the right to end their lives” (Staff Proquest. At Issue). People in Oregon disagree about the morality and ethicality of assisted suicide but they have all agreed on what caused the citizens to pass a law, two times, that allowed physicians to prescribe lethal medications to terminally ill patients. It was the pain, the fear of being in pain, and the effects that pain can have on a persons life. According to “Prescription for Suicide” they found that people fear pain more than they fear death. Many people with these illnesses must go through chemotherapy. Patients dread going through this treatment and therapy because it can be very painful, make them live in misery, and the success rate is extremely low. An alternative that individuals would rather have is painkilling palliative care, which can do great things such as helping them feel comfortable and not cause them to go through any pain while they are dying. It is proven that patients with a terminally ill disease spend around $50,000
