The usage of atomic warfare on a nation does not only affect that single country, but the entire world. Leo Szilard, an American scientist working with other scientists to create the atomic bomb, expresses his concern to the President. Leo Szilard critically explains that while the United States may require the use of the atomic weapons, he uses experienced affects and facts of using the atomic bomb that could negatively impact the image of the United States. The attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese exposed a huge weakness in the United States’ defense in 1945, and President Roosevelt and Trumann both contemplated using the atomic bomb in response. The attack devastated the United States pacific Navy and the island of Hawaii, and the citizens of the United States turned to the President for the counterattack measures. No civilization throughout history lasted if there was no retaliation because it shows weakness and an increased vulnerability. The use of the atomic bomb at the time, was possibly the only measure to show how puissant of a power the United States has become. “Until recently we have had to reckon with the possibility that the United States might be attacked by atomic bombs during this war and that her only defense might lie in a counterattack by the same means” (Szilard, Petition to President). While this was the quickest and easiest route to for a counterattack on the Japanese, the United States military did have the strength to plan a different counter tactic. Nuclear weapons are the most powerful weapons known in human history. The usage of the atomic bomb to end the war in the pacific is one of the most controversial methods of warfare in recent times. The United States, much more advanced in technology than a... ... middle of paper ... ...er powers of the world because of the possibility of the nuclear attack. Although unethical to use nuclear warfare on with nations, the most powerful governments of the world understand the stipulations of provoking another nation with nuclear power. The atomic bomb was an effective method to end the war in the pacific, but there could have begun more ethical ways of counterattacking. Like Leo Szilard stated to the President, the United States has changed the strategy of war throughout the world, and should be responsible for that. The new means of attack has created the new means of defense against any attacks. This method is great for super powers to have, but as a last resort to use.
