If school districts are being expected to shift the media’s portrayal of schools from negative to positive they must be able to recognize when good leaders go bad. They must also be willing to put in the work to find good, ethical leaders who will create a consistent culture of ethics within their schools. Leadership in the schools is the second most powerful influence over student achievement, second only to classroom teachers. If high test scores are what the school district is looking for, they may continue to see a rise in those leaders who are willing to lie and cheat. If true ethics in education is the goal, effective teachers and, most importantly, a quality leader must be present in each school.
