Ethics in counseling
Ethics are the rules of conduct which are recognized in respect to a particular class of human actions or a particular group, culture, etc. In ethics, the person always set precise goals that fall within an established set of moral guidelines or fair business practices. Professional ethics includes suchlevelsthat represent the positive ethical ideals and values of the professions such as having sufficient knowledge, skill, and judgment to use efficacious interventions, respecting the human dignity and freedom of the client, using the power essential in the professional’s role responsibly, acting in ways that promote public confidence in the profession and also placing the welfare of the clients as the professional’s highest priority.
Counseling is process of talking therapy through which a patient cantalk about his/her problems and feelings in a confidential and dependable environment. A counselor is trained to listen with empathy and help the patient to deal with any negative thoughts and feelings he/she have. Counseling help to deal with different mental health conditions, such as: depression, anxiety, borderline personality disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, long-term illnesses, eating disorders, such as anorexia and bulimia and drug misuse.
Before the counseling sessions begin, there must be a proper person that is trained and equipped in an effective manner to manage the counseling session. The person is the leader and will be placed at the forefront of the multiple issues that will arise during the session. The ethical principles are not only to benefit the mental health professionals, but to protect the clients, the families, associates and the general public. During the counseling sessions, the counselor encouraged the patient to express their feelings and emotions. By discussing the concerns, the counselor can better help the patient to gain a better understanding of their feelings and thought processes, as well as identifying ways of finding their own solutions to problems. The main responsibility of a good counselor is to focus on hispatients and listen without judging or criticizingthem. For effective counseling process,the patients need to build a trusting and safe relationship with their counselor.
