Jones explains that the idea of “teaching” ethics as facilitating the ethics educational experience. In my opinion, my goal is to push myself to think and learn more about ethical decision-making. By the end of this course, I hope to walk away with a stronger stance on ethical issues and hopefully establish my own opinions on different ethical dilemmas. I understand that an ethics course can challenge people’s comfort zone, but at the same provide me with the opportunities and platform to openly share my views and develop a stronger argument for what I believe in. In the class discussion, a class member mentioned that most of our values are pretty well set at this age and that ethics cannot be taught. Therefore, I appreciate that the class environment encourages personal choice and fosters personal decision-making instead of teaching us the “right” ethics. In the “teaching” of ethics, I hope that the instructor would not hold back on any views and share her opinions to create a well-rounded discussion. It is understood that the teaching of ethics always have a probability of influencing the values of the student, especially when the student does not hold any strong views on ethical issues. However, this concern is minimized when I begin to learn that ethics instructors themselves are quite discreet on their stance and to openly claim that they do not have answers to all the questions. When questions are left open, this helps lead the students toward personal thinking and the formulation of personal opinions. In this discussion, I want to share a personal experience I had. When minimal instructions are given about an assignment, independent thinking would occur. In the past, we have seen how specific assignment guidelines have guided many people towards dependent thinking. In the long term after post-secondary education, it is the critical thinking aspect that should stay with us. I believe that an ethics class can lead passive students to become more active and independent learners in the future. In addition, I believe that the ethics instructor is an important catalyst in creating this change in the students. As students approach more open-ended questions, do presentations and engage in class discussion, they will become more confident in ethical issues and have a clearer picture of where they stand on that topic.
