Ethics Web Assignment
In the Human Service professional we are bound by a code of ethics, we have a duty to our clients to help them during a crisis. When faced with dilemma’s we can use this code to help in decisions, to distinguish right or wrong, and set a standard on how we should conduct ourselves. It is standard to ensure people that are in a venerable state are treated with dignity, and respect. In this Human Service field we have three Associations that have a code of ethics in place to help us in our profession. Because of the ever changing times and happenings the code of ethics will probably be revised and improved to ensure the welfare and safety of people.

Treating every person with respect, dignity and ever learning to ensure client’s needs are met in every culture and circumstance. It brings attention and the need for education in the matter of race, gender identity, national origin, color, social diversity, etc., to warrant understanding for any dilemma that may occur. They are a tool in place to aid in “gray” matters. Because America is the “melting pot,” welcoming all types of cultures, and people it pushes us to constantly learn, study, and form an understanding for people of diversity. In a world with multiple cultures, lifestyles, disabilities, and such, we need a code to lead us in treating everyone in a sensitive manner, and to help them that best meets their culture customs. They all basically set standards to help ensure you are acting in an ethical manner. The Code of Conduct for Psychologists seem to be more strict or demanding. When in the position as psychologist or counselor you are responsible for the life of another. Not dealing with a client with standards could destroy the client’s life and the lives surrounding the client. People entrust of with their lives, thoughts, and care.
Combining the codes would have to include all aspects of each field. Although each profession deals with the client basically the same they all don’t care for the client in the same manner. Not all codes have disciplinary action given if a code is broken. Having all the codes combined would help remember them all, and to help in making sure they were all followed. The cons would be that some roles in a profession are not the same, not all cases are the same unless in the case of the role as a psychologist. Social worker may have more room to help their clients in ways the psychologist is not allowed
The first case that I have chosen to analyze is case #3. The standards from the Code of Ethics that comes into play regarding this particular case would be the first and most valuable one will be commitment to client. With this code the social worker primary responsibility is to promote any type of well-being to the clients. The social worker has to remain loyal to their clients. Another standard from the Code of Ethics would be the privacy and confidentiality with this code only as a social worker you are only allow to discuss with persons who are legally incapable of giving informed consent and also their legal representative. Moreover, both codes strive to promote the wellness, autonomy, and right to justice for individuals utilizing services. A further similarity between the two codes includes standards on sexual and/or romantic relationships with former clients, such as a counselor is prohibited from engaging in a sexual and/or romantic relationship with a former client for a minimum of 5 years after the last known professional encounter (ACA Code of Ethics, 2014, p. 5; AMHCA Code of Ethics, 2010, p. 4). Although engaging in a sexual and/or romantic relationshup with a former client may seem unlikely, this distinction and timeframe might be valuable to some individuals throughout their career. Furthermore, both ethical codes agree that when a counselor counsels multiple clients, such as individuals in a relationship, the counselor must clearly deliniate the roles within the theraputic dynamic and adjust and/or terminate the dynamic if the roles become unclear at any point (ACA Code of Ethics, 2014, p. 6; AMHCA Code of Ethics, 2010, p. 5). This is important to note due to the fact that the issue of multiple relationships in a therapeutic setting occurs frequently. After looking through the codes of ethics in which were presented, I decided to compare and contrast the American Psychological Association (APA) code of ethics to the International Association of Chiefs of Police Officer (IACP) code of ethics. When comparing the two codes, I was quite surprised as to what I came across. For example, she APA code of ethics is quite comprehensive in comparison to the IACP. For example, the APA code of ethics sets forth general principles, ethical standards, rules and procedures to follow, possible sanctions one could receive, and provides guidance for psychologists and organizations who choose to adopt them. Where as, in comparison the IACP code of ethics is barely a code of ethics as it represents more of what a police officer should do in comparison to what they should not do, as it does not provide any guidance for police officers, general principles, rules and procedures to follow, possible sanctions, or adequate guidance. When comparing the two codes, I also noticed, that while no code is ever able to be completely exhaustive, the APA code of ethics is more specific, offers a substantial amount of content and information in their code, as it is eighteen pages, in comparison to the IACP code of ethics, which is very broad, less detailed, full of “fluff” and merely two pages in length. According to NASW (2010), values are descried as the mission of the social worker in which this includes service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence. An essential value that is applicable to my practice setting is the service value. In a health care organization, it is important that the organization’s mission, philosophies, and ethics are followed through properly. . With the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is no different. . The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s “mission is to protect people’s health and to support the quality of life in humans by prevention and control of diseases, injuries, and disabilities” (About CDC, 2010, page or paragraph number with quotes). With the organization's mission, philosophies, and ethics it is important that everyone’s health is protected and proper prevention of diseases, illnesses, and disabilities are given to the public in a timely manner. The six core values that are described in the Code of Ethics by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) are social justice, service, importance of human relationships, dignity and worth of a person, integrity, and competence. According to the NASW (2016), these core values are the foundation for the purpose of the social work profession. It is essential for social work professionals to be able to put aside their personal values, and embody these core values when working with clients.
Additionally, like I mentioned in the beginning, in terms of beneficence, its principle stipulates that ethical theories should strive to achieve the greatest amount of good because people benefit from the most good. In respect for autonomy an ethical theory should allow people to reign over themselves and to be able to make decisions that apply to their lives. This means that people should have control over their lives as much as possible because they are the only people who completely understand their chosen type of lifestyle. The justice ethical principle states that ethical theories should prescribe actions that are fair to those involved. Code of ethics act as a promise to protect and support the safety of individuals in society, supports as a leading light it help the supporters of an occupation, resolve ethical problems and act as a protector the community. A code of ethics discloses and conserves the current viewpoint professionals on in what way to make ethical decisions. It stresses importance on obligation to moral values and vital beliefs. Application of a code of ethics helps us to guarantee that members of the profession will be accountable for their actions. It helps us to learn about the responsibility we have for ourselves, our colleagues and to the social structure of the profession. It is essential that the present and future psychologist should be aware of the formal ethical codes of practices in psychology. The American Psychological Association (APA) developed this formal Ethics Code which demonstrates the approaches to the psychologist about logical, educational, and clinical behaviors to be followed while working as a licensed person. By applying the ethical code a psychologist can identify ethical issues, interrelate with others professionally. This can inhibit and solve ethical dilemmas, and he /she will be able achieve their professional protagonists and responsibilities.
The following ethical principles are established on social worker’s six core values of the NASW’s Code of Ethics that included service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence. These ethical principles set the ideals that all social workers should pursue to their practice.
Professional ethical conduct is essential to the success of any client, whether it is in individual counseling or in a group setting. Professional psychologists, therapists, counselors, social workers or others in the field of human service or help have the duly responsibility to continuously become aware of their professional responsibilities, and manage their practice based on areas of ability.
