Within the world of business there are a few of “grey areas” that can be found. These areas often times present the question of what is unethical and what is ethical. The definition of ethical is “relating to moral principles or the branch of knowledge dealing with these” (Ethical, 2015) . One of those areas of question is whether or not it is ethical of a company, such as a retailer or insurance company, to provide their customer with less satisfactory customer service after the customer has paid for a good or service? A real life example of this type of situation is a customer returning an unwanted Christmas gift to a store with a receipt but is questioned and made to jump through hoops in order to return the gift even though it is unopened. Is the merchant in the right? Is the customer in the wrong? An area such as this should be examined from both point of views, the company’s and the customer’s, to decide what is ethical or unethical within this “grey area”.
When it comes to returns and exchanges retailers hold all the power (Return Policies, 2015). They can deny the customer the option to return a product or give return options for if a receipt is lost or the product was opened. With that being said, the system of returns is very much abused by customers all over the world (Terry, 2014). For example, many customers dislike the thought of fitting rooms and purchase clothing without trying it on. Once they get home they realize the shirt is too big or the pants they bought are too small and have to return the item (Paul & Hogan, 2015). Our textbook reminds us that “The problem is that our moral standards of behavior are subjective” (Hosmer, 2011) This is where many differences and arguments dealing with ethics arise from. A person’s morals can be shaped and molded from their culture, religion, social status and where they live. Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion of what is ethically or unethically correct. But in some situations, such as the situation of healthcare in America, many would agree that it is one or the other.
The relationship between retailers and customers or insurance companies and customers should be more ethically moral than they currently are. Comprises in both situations can be made to benefit both parties. "So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets." Matthew 7:12 ESV
